Spring Game Storylines

Intriguing positions to keep an eye on during next Saturday’s spring game:

1. Young cornerbacks: Madre Harper, Rodarius Williams and AJ Green all have a legitimate shot to start this fall. Problem is, they’re up against of the most talented WR corps in the country every day at practice. I’ll have a close eye on all three. Who makes the biggest plays? Who gets consistently burned. Should set up some interesting storylines for fall camp.

2. Jeff Carr: I feel bad for the guy after last season. He went from 36 carries as a true freshman to 12 as a sophomore. But Carr is THE guy in spring with Justice Hill rehabbing surgery. Carr needs to prove he’s physical enough to run through arm tackles and fast enough to the get the edge and turn the corner. I think his biggest contributions might be in the return game. He needs to show it.

3. Tyron Johnson: It’s early, but the LSU transfer is turning heads in practice. I expect the hype train will be in full force after the spring game. He’s a big-time talent.  [NewsOK]

I don’t know if it’ll be “thud” or tackle football but watching Jeff Carr get 15-20 carries should be interesting. If he can put some bulk behind that diminutive frame, could we see some Kendall Hunter-ish play? I’m not moving to Carr Island just yet but color me intrigued.

Frederickson has a point on the young corners: they’re playing the Cowboy version of the 1927 Yankees in practice. It’s hard to assess where they’re at in relation to their competition but a match up to watch nonetheless.

Aggressive Madre

Harper likes to hit folks.

Richards recalled the first spring practice last year. OSU players wore only helmets during a scrimmage period when Harper squared up a tailback running down the sideline, sending him to the turf with a thud. Defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer made it a point of learning. No need to injure your own players, there will be a time to hit, but the instruction came with a silver lining.

“We’d rather be pulling him out of the fight,” Spencer said, “than kicking him into the fight.”

At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Harper has never struggled with aggression.

“I’m hoping that what I see from Madre comes true,” Gundy said. “He’s around the ball all the time. He seems to have a little bit of an edge to him, and that’s good for a defensive player. So we’re encouraged.” [NewsOK]

Sounds like Madre has that aggressive gene Gundy talk about where they enjoy hitting people. Good to hear there’s some solid run support in line, now let’s hear about some coverage skills.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Pokes bats overwhelmed K-State to tie up the series….Baylor transfer looking good as Auburn quarterback….Baylor’s Johnathan Motley was named nation’s top power forward (please go pro, please go pro)….Softball team got smoked by Texas A&M….Three Big 12 guys rising up draft boards….Clemson offense looked shaky in their spring game

Those birdie putts….

Bummer, Brad lost another four star.
