Daily Bullets (August 20): Hovland on Philosophy, Walk-Ons Face Off in Preseason
Morning. Hope you’re ready for a loaded final week before football starts. We have a lot coming your way. To the students who start school today — enjoy your time in Stillwater, it goes by so fast.
Hovland takes Pebble
Great post here by Ryan Lavner on OSU’s unlikely champ.
During recruiting, Hovland would talk on the phone with Bratton for hours, about almost everything – TV shows, politics, philosophy. He devours podcasts. He’s an ardent movie critic. He extensively researches and then welcomes a debate on the day’s hottest topics.
Even without any tournament titles on Hovland’s résumé, Bratton was so smitten that he didn’t bother to bring in another recruit for the class of 2016. He was all-in, with no backup option, and Hovland visited the campus for the first time a week before signing day his senior year. [Golf Channel]
He also dropped a “Tiger who?”

One last scrimmage
OSU’s final fall camp scrimmage took place on Saturday evening in Stillwater. It sounds like all three QBs played well, even though Gundy later noted a QB depth chart.
Taylor Cornelius threw for four touchdowns, but they came in various situations. Two were thrown to Tylan Wallace, another to Tyron Johnson, and another to Jalen McCleskey.
Both Dru Brown and Spencer Sanders had success as well. The scrimmage featured more of the passing game where last Sunday seemed to focus more on the running attack. Brown’s biggest toss was a 31-yarder to Tracin Wallace and Sanders had a 39-yard touchdown toss to fellow freshman Jonathan Shepherd. Sanders also had a long run on a scramble. [Go Pokes]
Here are some highlights.

OSU And NCAA Notes
Gundy on the body types that normally play as freshmen … Advanced stats are unkind to Justice Hill … Good stuff here from Phillip on ranking OSU’s 13 season openers … Berry Tramel, not pleased with Urban … 2021 (!!!) QB with multiple offers likes Yurcich, OSU ($) … Stoner calls Corndog Baron “an equal opportunity quarterback.”
This is awesome.
