Underwood on Frank Mason
Oklahoma State coach Brad Underwood stopped to speak with Kansas senior guard Frank Mason in the handshake line after the No. 2-ranked Jayhawks’ narrow, come-from-behind 87-80 victory over the Cowboys on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.
“I told him if it (season) ended today, in my opinion he’d be National Player of the Year. He refuses to let them lose, both ends of the court,” Underwood said of the 5-foot-11 Petersburg, Va., native, who not only hounded standout OSU guard Jawun Evans defensively, but also led the Jayhawks in scoring with 22 points off 6-of-16 shooting. [Kansas City Star]
I actually wasn’t that impressed with Mason throughout. I thought he was all right but NPOY-worthy (although he has been for most of the year).
Dan the Man
Great Dan Bailey story here from Jenni Carlson.
But Burke kept insisting they should kick extra points, especially once he saw Bailey’s progress. Even though he had to practice either by kicking at a pre-determined point on the baseball backstops or by having two other players form human uprights, Bailey had a strong leg and high accuracy. When other coaches argued for using the two-point conversion, Burke countered that Bailey was a sure thing on extra points. [NewsOK]
The story about getting the PVC pipe into the ground so Bailey could bang home kicks was awesome. Would be incredible to see him kick a game-winner these playoffs.
Chuba comin’
Here is one of Chuba Hubbard’s assistant coaches on how good he is.
“One thing everybody needs to realize, he never played a full game on offense,” Buhagiar said. “If we kept him in on offense for the entire game, we’d probably put up 100 points on teams.” [NewsOK]
He also played his last high school game on a fractured fibula. Sign me up!
