Daily Bullets (July 19): Pokes Out of Range at Open Championship, The Next Mike Gundy?
Thanks for stopping by – here’s your daily dose of Oklahoma State sports news.
Three Thoughts
• No Cowboys are in range to finish high up the leaderboard at this point at The Open Championship – Rickie Fowler fell back a stroke while Viktor Hovland got a couple of strokes back (The Open)
• While OSU vs. Oregon may have been an intriguing national matchup, it’s rightly ranked just inside the top ten in this list of marquee non-conference games this fall (PFB)
• This HCS article has Mike Gundy as the No. 4 coach in the Big 12 with Matt Campbell at No. 1 – is it just me, or is Matt Campbell doing the same thing at Iowa State that Mike Gundy did 15 years ago? It seems like Matt Campbell is the next Mike Gundy.
Two Quotes
• It felt a bit risky, but Mike Gundy feels confident betting on three former Cowboys (Andrew Mitchell, Cooper Bassett, and Grant Garner) getting the unit up and running.
“All three of those guys were kind of self-made, under-recruited guys that came in and worked their way up to playing at a very high level,” Gundy said. “Most coaches that do the best job of coaching, in my opinion, are guys that worked their way up from the bottom and had to find a way to fight and survive. And all three of those guys did that.” [GoPokes 247]
• Thought this was an interesting take on who could be the next leading receiver at OSU (with Taylor Shettron likely out for the season due to injury):
Ayo Shotomide-King and Shamar Rigby are the two receivers who have that “throw it and I will catch it” mentality. They’re both 6-foot-3 with solid catch radiuses. [Go Pokes 247]
One Question
• Looking at the other top quarterbacks in the Big 12, where do you think OSU’s starter ends up on that list at the end of the year?
Non-OSU Bullets
• Steve Jobs’ rule for life • Being strong in God (faith-based)
“Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish. Lose track of the 400 pages and write just one page for each day, it helps. Then when it gets finished, you are always surprised.” John Steinbeck
