Mike Gundy gave a little more color on the quarterback situation in a recent interview with Doug Gottlieb.

The revealing part of the exchange occurred when Gottlieb said: “You’ve got Spencer Sanders, a kid that’s got a lot of talent but hasn’t ever seen live bullets, or you’ve got Dru Brown who has… What’s the decision like first game of the season, experience versus maybe upside or talent?”

“You’ve got to go with the guy that gives your offense the best chance to score points, and do it the right way,” Gundy replied. “You might have one guy that’s more explosive, but if he’s turning the over and doesn’t understand the offense and he can’t distribute it to Chuba Hubbard or (Tylan) Wallace or get it to the right people, then he’s going to cause you more problems than a guy that can distribute the ball.” [TulsaWorld]

For sure – you want the guy who can put the most points on the board. Here’s a question that may apply in this scenario – would you rather play the gunslinger who can get the ball down the field but may throw an interception or two each game or the conservative, dink-and-dunk down the field and risk not getting there.

• John Helsley takes a look at the “Cowboy Culture” and how it differentiates from other alternatives.

Some programs win more, for sure. And many take risks.

Gundy’s not down for that.

“The win at all costs theory has never crossed my mind,” he said. “That’s not something personally I believe in. I believe in developing young men.

“I know at times there are coaches that might say that, but we back that up at Oklahoma State. We’re in that business right now.”

It’s never perfect. Some guys have to be shown the exit. Some lose sight of the culture, maybe get selfish, and lose their way. [GoPokes]

Win at all costs is a method, ask Art Briles. Heck, ask Pete Carroll about his time at USC. Gundy’s personality doesn’t necessarily embody Stillwater better than other coaches (see Boynton, Mike) but his method of building a program resonates deeply: bringing in blue-collar guys with good behaviors and watch it grow.

• Hear what fantasy football pundits are saying about Justice Hill’s projected production with the Baltimore Ravens this season.

Fantasy Ceiling: Hill could win out as the passing-down back in the Ravens’ offense. And (Ravens offesnive coordinator) Roman can cater to Hill’s game-breaking speed on misdirection concepts. Get this guy in space. That’s where he becomes a weapon on short throws for (Lamar) Jackson and in the screen game. [ESPN+ $$$]

A ceiling of third-down back and change-of-pace weapon seems like a reasonable ambition for Justice Hill as a rookie. Would we be surprised if he ended up carrying the load prematurely, even if he is undersized?

• Thinking through the NFL coaching candidates in the Big 12 was interesting

• Nice move here by Pete and Gundy – this young lady is in fantastic shape for a 100-year-old!

Non-OSU Bullets

• Really neat story about an Iowa carpenter that left his estate to send the underprivileged to college

• Good thoughts from (OKC Thunder GM) Sam Presti moving forward

• Great faith-based article for those of us with little ones

I agree with this completely.
