Weeknight Warriors

Robert Allen brings the story behind the move to weeknight games.

The Thursday move for the opener was to insure that there would be a good student turnout for the Tulsa game on the Labor Day weekend as students notoriously leave town after Friday classes. Also, the Tulsa game was the third tier television game for football and Oklahoma State was shopping for the best deal. It is Oklahoma State’s game to distribute or sell right to and not property of the Big 12 television package.

The South Alabama move gives the Cowboys an extra day to navigate the back to back road trips to Mobile and then the next week to Pittsburgh. Every little bit helps in dealing with longer road trips. [GoPokes – $]

Maximizing your money for the Tulsa game makes sense, especially for the opener. But it’s a tough line to walk: fill up the student section or give the alums time to get there.

Glory Days

Robin Ventura’s visit to the dugout brought up one of Oklahoma State baseball’s greatest assets: a storied past.

“After the game I walked in the dugout and there’s Robin Ventura, came in to watch us play,” Josh Holliday said. “You just start connecting the dots. For 16 straight years, every time there was a (Big Eight) tournament played in Oklahoma City, we won it. I got to win the last one in ’96 when it was the Big Eight. Since then we’ve only done it one time.” [NewsOK]

Mike Gundy is building a baseline foundation for future Oklahoma State football coaches to work from. Not to remotely minimize the fantastic job he’s done but it’s a material difference that Holliday can dust off and point at 16-straight tourney titles.
