Daily Bullets (Mar. 28): Gundy Talks QBs

Published

The TulsaWorld and The Oklahoman are both in the process of replacing their OSU beat writers – bummed not to have their voices on the beat this year and sad to see these two talented journalists go.

OSU Bullets

• This remark about Cowboy Football looking at making changes in the coaching staff was insightful.

I mean, change for change sake can be good — and bad. What if the new guy isn’t as good as the other guy? Then you’ve got problems. (Mike) Yurcich did a good job. He was the last of OSU’s problems. Defense is what needs to change in Stillwater. [NewsOK]

I love this talk of all the levers and variables you can alter as a coach to get to the best possible outcome. I’m not convinced paying a defensive coordinator the salary Mike Yurcich got and a constant flow of D-II and D-III offensive minds isn’t the best way to go.

• Another Texas A&M basketball recruit is back on the market – this time a point guard.

Former A&M signee Chris Harris will be on a visit to Stillwater this weekend after receiving his release from the Aggies, and now it has been revealed that Sahvir Wheeler is also back on the market.

Wheeler, a four-star recruit, becomes the nation’s top uncommitted point guard (apart from Lamelo Ball, who will unlikely be able to play college basketball). 247’s composite rankings list Wheeler as the 93rd-ranked recruit in the country. [247]

There’s nothing out about OSU’s level of interest but I’m all for adding a facilitating point guard with the ability to score. Good things have come to OSU in smaller builds before.

• Let’s take a shot at reading the tea leaves with Mike Gundy’s latest comments about his quarterbacks.

“They’re obviously making some mistakes, we’re correcting them and they should be getting better every day,” Gundy said. “They have ability. They can make a play if things break down. They’re very willing to learn and they’re competitive. It’s just not something you can hit the fast-forward button on.

“We’ve got enough guys to make plays, so we need them to function in our system and be able to distribute the ball in the right way without turning it over. That gives us the best chance for success.” [NewsOK]

It sounds like there’s too much forcing the action (mistakes = incomplete passes and/or interceptions) and not just taking what the system provides. Both quarterbacks have the capacity to make a play with their legs if needed.

• This Yor Anei highlight reel is fun.

• This talk of Fred Hoiberg-to-Nebraska is crazy to me. Here’s a solid piece with some coaching carousel talk in college basketball.

Non-OSU Bullets

• Some great ideas about what to value at work (effectiveness over time) and processing values

• I liked this faith-based read looking at the life of the disciple
