Gundy’s Contract

Headway being made on locking up the Mullet into his 50’s.

It appears to be an indication the university and Gundy have finally agreed to terms on the contract, nine months after an original extension for Gundy was approved but never signed.

Gundy, 49, has three seasons left on his current deal, which was signed in 2012 and runs through the 2019 season. He is slated to make $3.9 million in 2017, $4.025 million in 2018 and $4.15 million in 2019.

Last June, the Oklahoma State/A&M Board of Regents approved a two-year extension for Gundy last June that would have kept his salary at $4.15 million through 2021.

But that extension was never signed.

“In order for that to happen, both parties have to come to an agreement and that hasn’t taken place,” Gundy said in December.

The Tulsa World reported in December that Gundy’s dissatisfaction centered on pay for his staff as much as his own pay. [TulsaWorld]

If I was guessing, top three hold ups: $$$ for assistants so that Marcus Arroyo/Joe Wickline never happens again (get out of here with non-play calling OCs), Gundy-produced hay being the official provider for the equestrian team and a few more dollars for a potential early retirement. Throw in a custom singlet and some bear grease and we’ll call it a day.

Figuring Out the Real Problem

The plan was solid but execution was lacking.

The Cowboys talked bravely of shoring up the defense. “Give up 92 points, not going to beat many teams,” Phil Forte said. “As good as we are offensively, we can’t give up that many points.”

That’s true. But it’s also true that as good as OSU is offensively, it can’t miss that many close shots. Both the Cowboys and Cyclones made 14 shots in the restricted area, right at the basket. Iowa State missed three; OSU missed 20.

Including Carroll’s layup with 13:15 left in the game and OSU down, 56-51. Iowa State converted a three-point play on the other end — off Darrell Bowie’s dunk; the Cowboys could use more dunks — and OSU had another big hill to climb.

“Seemed like every time we got multiple stops or had an opportunity, we weren’t able to score, take advantage of it,” Underwood said. “They put a lot of pressure on you to be good offensively and we weren’t.”

Eventually, Underwood is likely to have a roster than can play the frenetic defense he prefers. But this OSU team has to play just-try-to-hold-on defense. This OSU team has to outscore foes. Iowa State is hard enough to outscore, but even more so when the Cowboys miss easy shots. [NewsOK]

I don’t think the Cowboys brought a knife to a gun fight, but we did forget to pack enough bullets. You’ll beat a lot of teams putting up 83 and even more taking 21 more shots (!) than them.

While it hurts seeing the bracket turn out so Cowboy-friendly (No KU/Baylor), credit to Underwood getting the team in a position to win. I think it’s important to remember he’s doing this with Ford’s feathery guards (no offense, these dudes shoot lights out) and not the ruffians necessary to execute his preferred style.

Collect your winnings if you had K-State in the semi’s and not Kansas.

I’d go for OSU practice unis about now, we’re ready for some new duds.

20 missed layups… we weren’t playing Baylor. And this counts as a “make”!
