Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

Decision makers at Oklahoma State aren’t in an envious position.

I would suggest to Oklahoma State that they do as the Tulsa World reported they may, and find that athletic director-in-waiting, and let Mr. Pickens give his 2 cents (or several hundred million cents?) on who that person should be.

But if he holds firm on “Holder or else”, then Oklahoma State needs to have the cajones to possibly move on, call Pickens’ bluff, and see what happens.

If the Gundy/Holder relationship keeps deteriorating, and Gundy does eventually decide to jump ship, Oklahoma State’ football program will absolutely take a step back. One of the reasons the mess within the basketball program the past few years hasn’t been as much of a focus as it would’ve been 15+ years ago is because Oklahoma State officially became a football school, with many thanks to Gundy. I’m not about to consider the business of calling bluffs but the university has two main goals: alleviate the deteriorating relationship between the athletic director and the winningest coach in Oklahoma State football history and preserving the relationship with the largest benefactor Oklahoma State has ever seen.

How this is all managed will be super intriguing. But it does feel like some relationships in there are beyond repair and resolution is impending.

A Slam Dunk Hire

The Pokes wouldn’t have to look far for a solid replacement option.

(Chad) Weiberg is the deputy athletics director at Texas Tech. He was hired in May 2015, coming over from Kansas State, where in 2014 Weiberg was named Fundraiser of the Year by the National Association of Athletic Development Directors.

Weiberg spent nine years at K-State, where he more than doubled the Wildcats’ donor base.

The most relevant part of Weiberg’s past is his OSU connection. He’s a 1994 graduate of OSU’s Spears School of Business and also has a master’s from OSU in business administration. Weiberg spent nine years working at OSU, in various positions with the athletic department, the OSU Alumni Association and the OSU Foundation. [NewsOK]

Looks like an easy decision: alum with good experience and stellar performance. Get him a little time under Mike H. then he’s off and running.

I’d simply ask he go on a summer vacation with Boone first, maybe start with naming one of your kids after him. Also, we’ll need a Meyers-Briggs test analyzed. Throw in some Bass Pro gift cards to Gundy and John Smith and we’re on our way to functional working relationships.
