Best Backs in Oklahoma

ESPN listed the Cowboys’ stable of backs fifth in the league but ahead of an important team.

5. Oklahoma State (4): The Cowboys are thin here but remain in the top half of the league largely because of Justice Hill, the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year in 2016 who rushed for 1,142 yards. Look for Canadian newcomer Chuba Hubbard to complement Hill, along with senior Jeff Carr.

And we already like incoming freshman J.D. King out of Georgia, mainly because his mom is a noted advocate of the Mike Gundy mullet. [ESPN]

Who saw the day coming when both Oklahoma and Texas would be perceived as having an inferior running back situation to Oklahoma State? The Sooners lost a pair of NFL backs so that’s pretty reasonable but still surprising.

Hard Work Pays Off

Cowboy offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich is living the American dream after working his way up the ladder.

“We did things at Shippensburg I had wanted to do for a long time,” Yurcich said. “A lot of the things I did I copied, some I made up, but for the most part it was watching a lot of film and spread offenses, learning tempo, learning from mistakes and being able to have the courage and the freedom to experiment. That’s the biggest thing we did. ”

The end result of those schemes was two record-setting seasons with Shippensburg. His first team set school records for points and total yards. His second, in 2012, Shippensburgh led the nation (D-II) in total offense and finished second with 46.9 points per game. [247 Sports]

The interview goes on to talk about how he missed out on a D-2 head coaching position the same year that Gundy hired him, close call. But Shippensburg OC to taking calls from Bama and Auburn in the off-season must be quite a ride for a guy – feels like just yesterday that Gundy exponentially multiplied his salary.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Next winter’s bowl schedule is mostly set….Impressive academic performances by OSU’s athletes this year, football is climbing….ACC football is about to look like the SEC (not in a great way)….Dana Holgerson has a new rival for the Red Bull sponsorship in college football….Former Cowboy Lenzy Pipkins talks with Green Bay media about his chances….Tram talks on free games during a redshirt season

That’s all the validation I need for the Gundy gene pool-obsession.

It was interesting when he talked about how his dad (former-KU football player) let him know what it took to get to the collegiate level.

Congrats to a pair of Cowgirls who made All-Big 12 softball first team, two others earn all-conference spots as well.
