Daily Bullets (May 21)

I’m back! For one day only. Steven Mandeville, who has been killing the Bullets for the past year, has the day off, so I’m here with you to talk Dax, gamblin’ and NCAA golf. Let’s jump right in.

How good is Justice’s brother?

During the two years since he became the Booker T. head coach, Brad Calip also has been like, wow. “I coached Brandon Daniels in Ada,” Calip said. “He was remarkable and he went on to play at OU, but Brandon was not in the same class as Dax.

“When you combine everything, Dax is in a class by himself. In my 27 years of coaching, he’s the best athlete I’ve ever been around.” [Tulsa World]

Great read there from Bill Haisten. Transform every rumor into a liquid and intravenously inject it directly into my veins.

Wits and wagers

Some notes here on betting on college sports. First, questions about it from a bigger picture.

College oddsmakers will force you to test just how much you believe in one team being amazing and one team being a doormat. Be prepared to deal with huge numbers. In 2017, Alabama’s football team was a 36.5-point favorite against Tennessee. The Tide won by 38. That was a reasonable line, obviously, but it was jarring to see. It might be a little lighter on your brain to decide whether the Jets can cover a 13.5-point line against the Patriots. [SB Nation]

And what about looking at this upcoming season specifically?

Bill Connelly: I think Ohio State at 9.5 feels strange simply from the perspective of “they’ve been under 10 wins once since 2004,” and Oklahoma at 10.5 seems shaky even for someone who doesn’t think of the odds of a huge drop-off are very high. But when it comes to getting people betting, these are reasonably sensible. [SB Nation]

I don’t really know how I feel about the whole gambling scene as it relates to college sports. It feels … weird, but it’s also about to be legal in many states and will likely be quite normal and built into the way we consume these things over a decade or so. It’s a topic I’m planning on exploring in greater depth later on this week.

OSU And NCAA Notes

Emma Boze is eight back but counting milkshakes at Karsten Creek (she’s T13 after three rounds) … Great stuff here on OSU’s strength guys … Georgetown player who was told he’d never walk again did so … at his college graduation … Good Q&A here with women’s golf coach Courtney Jones … Pie-charted heart of college football’s most heated rivalries … Tua wanted to transfer (headline: Bama gets much-needed lucky break) … The Ringer NBA Draft guide is remarkably good … Sam Presti is not interested in rebuilding the Thunder

Minicamp sights and sounds from Pittsburgh.

Good Morning Football discusses the impact of the Steelers drafting Mason.

This is not related to OSU or the NCAA, but it had me rolling all weekend.
