D-Line Development

ESPN released their post-spring depth chart with high hopes for a Cowboy defensive tackle.

Losing Vincent Taylor unexpectedly to the NFL draft was a blow, but the Cowboys are hopeful that (Darrion) Daniels can follow the same trajectory that Taylor did last year. Daniels has the potential to also be a difference-maker in the middle.

Oklahoma State is deeper at end, where position coach Joe Bob Clements should be able to run through a five-man rotation without any drop-off. This should form a solid group, but Daniels could make it more than just that. [ESPN]

If the touted Daniels is able to offer a semblance of the destruction reeked by Vincent Taylor and Emmanuel Ogbah before him, that would significantly help the fledgling secondary.

Other surprises on their (outside the program) depth chart were Chuba Hubbard backing up Justice Hill, Tyron Johnson starting in the slot (with Marcell Ateman backing up Chris Lacy) and Trey Carter starting at defensive tackle over DQ Osborn.

Breakout Candidate

CBS mentioned a likely breakout player from each Big 12 team and OSU’s player is not short of hype:

WR Tyron Johnson, sophomore. The transfer from LSU already has established himself as a favorite target for Heisman contender quarterback Mason Rudolph. The speedy Johnson was a five-star recruit coming out of high school. With so many talented players around him, including Biletnikoff Award contender James Washington, Johnson likely will have some favorable matchups. [ABC News]

One of the biggest perks in bringing back college football’s only back-to-back 1,000 yard receiver as a centerpiece is what that does for his teammates. Johnson is rumored to be extremely difficult to bring down from the slot position, think of him playing on the same side of the field as Washington.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Nick Saban will break the $10m barrier this season….Get used to top talent skipping bowl games *sad face*….The Dolphins got a pair of Louisiana tackles that can ball (VT is from New Orleans)….Mason goes at No. 16 in this too-early mock…..Really good piece comparing Mixon and Tyreek’s pro situations

Just try and keep Mason Favre out of a game.

Tennis seeding for the NCAA’s came out, women got a nine seed and the men got an eleven.

After beating them in extra innings last month, the Pokes came up short at ORU last night:

Cowboys fall short in Tulsa.
