Coordinators on CraigsList
The veil was recently pulled back just a bit on Mike Gundy’s defensive coordinator preferences.
So Gundy went searching. He didn’t care about scheme — four-man front, three-man front, didn’t matter — he cared about results. Who took rosters not necessarily bubbling with elite talent and produced effective defenses?
Gundy figured the only way to find out was the internet.
So he devised his own criteria. Strong in points-per-possession, the new and best way to gauge defenses. Who regularly got off the field with minimal damage from a scoring standpoint? Who might be enticed by an OSU program not rooted in tradition but brimming with success the last decade? [NewsOK]
Gundy is all about the points per drive and it makes sense. It’s hard to adjust for tempo and amount of possessions. What’s just as interesting is his pool of preferred options.
“From this point forward, maybe even coordinators, I shouldn’t have to hire anybody that either hasn’t worked for me, because I’ve been here 14 years, or played here and been successful somewhere else,” Gundy said. “I think there’s like 60-something coaches that have worked here, in a volunteer role or GA or quality control or analyst that are at a high level now. It’s amazing. I see guys on TV, I’m like, ‘that guy used to work here.’
“So from this point moving forward, I should be able to have guys that I know and trust, then I can hire ‘em. But I wasn’t quite ready to do that.” [NewsOK]
That’s not necessarily a great big pool of candidates but it’s certainly Cowboy-friendly in one respect.
Take Your Pick
When asked about projecting OSU’s starting quarterback next year, Berry Tramel posed a good question worth circling back to.
“I’m going to say Dru Brown. I don’t know anything. Most people will say Cornelius early, replaced by Sanders, the freshman. But I don’t see a guy like Brown transferring from Hawaii without believing — and getting reinforcement — he would win the job.” [NewsOK]
When the guy had offers from the likes of LSU and Baylor, it’s hard to get past the sort of promises that would seemingly be made to get him to campus.

Not a huge deal to cut the price on the 300 level seats but a good deal if it helps with retention.
