Out of Reach

There may be something strategic about Henson’s offensive line recruiting class.

With nine months left until 2018 National Signing Day, OSU has landed commitments from four offensive linemen — Hunter Anthony (Tuttle), Bryce Bray (Bixby), Woodard (Tuscola, Ill.) and Tyrese Williams (Houston) — after failing to sign a single high school offensive lineman in last year’s class. [NewsOK]

Three out of four of those 2018 recruits hail from north of the Red River. It’s undeniable that they’re talented guys that have a place at the next level. Interesting that there’s not more from Texas like we’ve seen in the past…

“That could very well happen to whoever is recruiting, we don’t know that here at Oklahoma State,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said back in February. “The geography in what we do in recruiting sometimes is not as advantageous for us as it is for those other schools. We have to take all that into account.” [NewsOK]

Better said, “we’re sick of Texas and Texas A&M taking our handpicked talent late in the recruiting cycle”. Now, Texas A&M did take a commit the Pokes had last year from Meeker, OK but usually it’s Texas kids they’ll poach.

The Pokes have never been opposed to in-state talent, it was just a matter of finding worthy guys that aren’t pining for the call from OU.

Got Horses

Non-OSU news but in honor of the Kentucky Derby, folks are naming horses after LSU running backs:

Staton Flurry, a stable owner in Arkansas, has a new steed taking on the namesake of LSU running back Derrius Guice. The name is more than appropriate given the LSU running back ended the 2016 season as the conference’s second-leading rusher and enters the 2017 season as one of the top running backs in the nation. That’s when you know you’ve got dudes. We can only hope for film of races between the players and their namesakes.

While we’re here, when was the last time OSU had a player worth naming a horse after? I feel like Chris Carson was a couple tenths of a second off of his forty time away. Total cop-out but probably Dez.
