Daily Bullets (Nov. 18): Cornelius’ Moment in the Sun, OSU Shows Multiple Personalities in the Big Win

When Good Things Happen

Something that made last night so fun was seeing guys like Taylor Cornelius come out on top. Especially when you consider recent (non-Texas) history.

Cornelius accounted for six touchdowns – five passing and one rushing. And with the Cowboys down 41-38 with 2:38 remaining, he directed a seven-play, 75-yard drive to the winning score, complete when he found emerging star Tylan Wallace for an 11-yard touchdown with 42 seconds left. Wallace did his share, carrying West Virginia corner Keith Washington Jr. on his back the final yards, but Cornelius was the delivery man on a night he completed 30 of 46 throws.

And it came on Senior Day for the former walk-on and fifth-year journeyman who had to wait his turn just to play meaningful minutes, then endure frequent criticisms throughout the schedule.

“He didn’t show it, but you could tell (last week) tore him up inside,” Gundy said.

“I’m happy for him that he could finish that drive (today).” [247 Sports]

Taylor Cornelius may kick puppies when no one’s watching for all I know. But everything you hear from other players sounds like he’s the right kind of guy. Seeing more clips like this really puts you in the guy’s corner as well (No. 40 went to the Breckyn Hager school of toolbags).

Also, these are numbers I can get behind.

Changing Tides

It felt like you were watching multiple different OSU teams last night from drive-to-drive.

It was fair to assume they would labor through an up-and-down campaign. But this is pretty impressive.

Both OSU teams were on display on Saturday evening. WVU out-gained the Pokes by 121 yards in the first half; OSU was 1-for-6 on third downs and turned the ball over twice. They were lucky to be down only 17, having forced a field goal and made a fourth-and-short red zone stop in the second quarter.

In the second half, they both simplified things and relaxed. [SBNation]

It felt like the defense was doing everything it could in the second quarter just keeping the ship afloat. The offense massively corrected in the second half, reportedly with a thrown out gameplan replaced with fresh concepts. And a center that hit his stride after not playing all season (kudos!).

Corn’s numbers support that theory as well.

Forcing the Issue

How in the world has seventh-round pick Chris Carson kept his job/spot in the rotation after his team used a FIRST-ROUND PICK on a running back?

Carson has prevented the team’s first-round investment in Penny from pushing him out of the fold in Seattle, as the second-year seventh-round pick currently leads the team in carries (128) and rushing yards (580) through 11 weeks. And he’s done so by picking up more yards than what’s been blocked for him this season.

Among the 38 NFL running backs with 80-plus carries this season, Carson ranks seventh in rushing grade at 79.0. He also ranked tied for ninth in forced missed tackles per rush (0.20) and tied for second in yards after contact per rush (3.5) among the same group of backs. [ProFootball Focus]

How well did OSU’s offensive lines of 2015 and 2016 prepare him for this? Pretty darn well. The dude constantly turned sour milk into a milkshake powering through tough situations. And he’s doing the same in 2018.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Bill Haisten on the improbable win was great….MacIntyre’s right here – he should have plenty of equity in Boulder….Different kind of senior day for dogs and horses….Get your TCU research in here seeing how they beat Baylor….Mark Cooper (TulsaWorld) and Nathan Ruiz (NewsOK) empty their notebooks from the WVU win

If OSU gets a 2018 mid-term election type of turnout, Wallace will have a shot at the fan vote. Tech receiver has a lead currently.

I really wanted the play where the ref took out the WVU running back on here.

Check out the Cowboy Basketball matinee this afternoon if you’re still in town. I’m curious how Weathers looks with more minutes.

Real talk: if he plays for KU last night, does Kansas beat OU in Norman?

This was an absolute dime from the Southeastern Louisiana State Mud Dogs quarterback (probably):

The only guy (tongue-in-cheek) sad about bowl eligibility.

Yesterday on PFB (when OSU beat a CFP Contender)
