Daily Bullets (Oct. 25): Evaluating Gundy, Chuba vs. ISU is Big Time

Published

Mike Gundy is in the top fifteen of highest-paid football coaches in the country – it’s worth watching the rest of the games to see what a guy worth that premium does with a football team.

• Porter nailed this closing summary on why it’s fair to evaluate the previously untouchable Mike Gundy at this point.

But when you see questions asked about Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State football program, remember that they’re not coming from the 1 percent anymore. They’re coming from the 20 or 40 or 55 percent that thinks smartly about college football and the context within which it is played.

Mike Gundy has lost a lot over the past few years. Games, trust and the benefit of the doubt. I like Gundy and I like that he’s the head coach of this program so I hope he flips it around the other way before he loses it all. [PFB]

I’m always fascinated to see what third parties have to say – a perspective with nothing to gain by their opinion. That person would objectively say that a great coach, the best in school history, underachieved (2017), saw his team play to win every other week (2018), and see his team lose to multiple teams that he shouldn’t (2019).

• While OSU vs. Iowa State was likely pretty far down the list for College Gameday, seeing Chuba Hubbard take on a strong defensive front is premier entertainment.

Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard vs. Iowa State defense. Hubbard is the nation’s rushing leader with 1,265 yards (180.9 yards per game) and 15 touchdowns. The Cyclones have allowed only 111 yards rushing per game, second in the Big 12, and a league-low five touchdowns. Only one running back has gained more than 58 yards against them, and that was 93 yards in a non-conference game. [Yahoo Sports]

• I’m convinced Mike Boynton is the kind of guy that even if he weren’t your school’s head coach, you’d probably have every reason to want him to win.

The 37-year-old coach understands where he is. He knows it’s time to win again at a place where it’s very upsetting if that doesn’t occur.

“I have a responsibility as the head coach at Oklahoma State to uphold the program’s standards,” Boynton said at one point Wednesday.

To reach those standards, he must live up to his own. He must work as he always has, and have faith that doing so will take him places others are more skeptical he can go. [TulsaWorld]

It’s hard to imagine another mentality that would make a coach more successful than Boynton’s – responsibility, treat others well, work hard. It’s a bit cliche but I think the way he carries himself really comes across well with others, he comes across as a sincere person.

• Some faith-based angles but this article provided a great learning hack. It should go without saying but it’s worth reminding if there’s something you want to get into more.

Though I stumbled across this little life hack on my own, it turns out there is a whole body of research that backs it up. Many studies in the educational field have proven that if a teacher can convince students to care about a subject, their grades will go way up. It makes sense anecdotally, too. Think back to your favorite subjects in school. Often, it’s a great teacher—one who is passionate about their subject—who helps us care about the topic and do well in class. [Redeeming Productivity]
