Happy Homecoming – enjoy some time in/thinking about everybody’s second home. And make sure to swing by the PFB tailgate, the fam and I will be making an appearance for however long one-year-olds enjoy being at a tailgate.

If the football isn’t fun, let’s all just enjoy those beautiful uniforms.

What Might Have Been

Landing Barry Sanders gave OSU, and potentially college football, the best season a running back could have. Could you imagine if he had gone to the University of Tulsa instead?

Sanders, who (TU head coach) Morton and (TU running backs coach) Clark remember as having verbally committed to the Golden Hurricane several weeks earlier, was going to Oklahoma State instead.

“That’s how close we were,” Morton said.

“We were so excited about it,” Clark said, “because we thought we really had a chance to get him. It was heartbreaking for the University of Tulsa, as you can imagine. I do imagine.”

In 1988, the year Sanders won the Heisman Trophy for OSU while changing our perception of what is humanly possible for a college running back, his father, William Sanders, told Tulsa World columnist Bill Connors: “The night before signing date, I went to bed thinking Barry would sign with Tulsa. Barry never said that he would. Barry never talked much about it, but I thought he would sign with Tulsa.

“The next morning he got up and said he would sign with Oklahoma State.” [TulsaWorld]

Would OSU be wearing Thurman Thomas jerseys today if not for Barry? Probably not this year since we’re doing the whole “30 year anniversary” but you could imagine the other Hall of Fame running back getting more love in that case.

Break the Barrier

Porter unearthed the important offensive number to get to.

1. Get to 40: OSU is 69-7 when scoring 40+ points under Mike Gundy. The losses are all pretty memorable and include just one in which OSU scored 50 or more (last year’s Bedlam game). [PFB]

In Memory

As Marcus Smart processes life without his mother, he had some poignant thoughts he shared with The Oklahoman.

After games, he’ll return to the locker room and eventually fish his phone out of his locker. He’ll look at his missed calls and see he doesn’t have one from his mom.

In that moment, he’ll realize that he forgot.

“You prepare for the big things, but the little things are what kind of gets you and chokes up and makes you realize this really happened,” he said, “and there’s nothing you can do to change it.”

Basketball doesn’t change reality, but being on the court allows Marcus Smart to escape it.

“The biggest thing now for me is to be out here,” he said. “When I’m out here, I’m going to give it everything I have.” [NewsOK]
