If you’re curious how an Oklahoma school got the name “Golden Hurricanes” – here you go. The short answer is Georgia Tech had the desired named first.

OSU Bullets

• Pretty cool to read about the series history between OSU and Tulsa – as they’re scheduled to be seeing a lot more of each other.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have had a strange series with Tulsa. OSU and TU played every year from 1926 through 1965. But between 1929 and 1945, the teams played only twice in Stillwater. Then the series resumed in 1976, with 21 games over 25 seasons, basically playing home-and-home.

Now in the 2000s, the teams have played just five times, thrice in Stillwater and twice in Tulsa. TU plays in Stillwater in 2020 and 2021. But in 2024, the series resumes annually, with alternating sites. Which means when the home-and-home format returns in five years, OSU will have played in Tulsa 39 times, and Tulsa will have played in Stillwater 36 times. Fascinating. [NewsOK]

If you thought that was fun – I love using this site to compare the history of two programs and I’ve got it linked to OSU v. Tulsa.

Another fascinating tidbit in the above piece concerning OSU: Ole Miss hasn’t played in a bowl game since the 2015 Sugar Bowl. Serves ’em right, darn cheaters.

• Fascinating read from earlier this week on Cade Cunningham and looking at the history of high-majors hiring players’ relatives and the impact on their recruitment. And a disappointing nugget was slipped in there about Cunningham’s recruitment.

Even more notable is how UNC’s Roy Williams and UK’s John Calipari each made it a priority Monday to visit Cunningham at Montverde Academy in Florida on what was the first day of the recruiting period. It was a development that suggested what multiple sources have told CBS Sports — that Cunningham has promised the schools pursuing him that he’s not a done-deal to Oklahoma State, and that the schools that remain involved in his recruitment believe he’s being sincere.

Otherwise, what would be the point? [CBS Sports]

Woof. It’s as if OSU is proposing to Cunningham and he’s saying hold up – there’s an awfully good looking suitor, let me check that out first and get back to you.

On a good note, the article did include this encouraging bit:

To be clear, none of this means Cade Cunningham won’t eventually end up at Oklahoma State; that probably remains where the smart money lies. But that it’s not done yet, and that some of the sport’s heaviest hitters believe they can prevent it from getting done, is fascinating on multiple levels. [CBS Sports]

• The most underrated position battle that continues to persist is who will emerge across from Tylan Wallace – the bit below frames the argument for each candidate well.

The battle for (Tyron) Johnson’s old spot this year seems to be between Jordan McCray, Patrick McKaufman, and C.J. Moore. Moore is the shortest of the three at 6 foot 5, and their towering frames make them a great compliment opposite of the smaller, explosive Wallace.

McKaufman, a redshirt junior, has been around the longest, South Alabama grad transfer McCray has seen the most playing time, but redshirt freshman Moore has two impressive touchdowns on just three catches this season. But which one will take control and become the guy? [HCS]

• I think this is the battle that will define if OSU gets over 50 points – Chuba/Spencer vs. the TU front seven

• Ranking the CFP matchups that would be fun to see

• Cowboy alum, seven-footer that was Leonard Hamilton-recruited and Eddie Sutton-coached Johnny Pittman passed away

• Klatt says not to sleep on the Pokes – “Won’t surprise me at all if Oklahoma State ends up playing for the Big 12 title.”

Non-OSU Bullets

• Pretty wild to read these interviews with recently retired NFL players

• Great podcast here – my favorite NBA listen interviewed Boomtown author Sam Anderson to talk Oklahoma/Thunder

What this guy found in NYC trash was crazy:
