Pokes face their first real test today – tame the Broncos.

Berry Tramel walks us through why the Pokes vs. the Broncos is the game of the week in the league.

But both USC and Texas already have lost; the Longhorns looked like their same mediocre selves in losing at Maryland, and the Trojans went without a touchdown in a loss at Stanford.

TCU is undefeated and ranked 15th, but the Horned Frog passing game seems shaky under new quarterback Shawn Robinson, and passing might be the only way to dent the Buckeyes.

Iowa State’s season opener was canceled by weather, then the Cyclones also went without a touchdown last week, losing 13-3 at Iowa. Worse, ISU quarterback Kyle Kempt has a knee injury and might not play.

Finally, West Virginia’s marquee game at North Carolina State has been canceled by weather.

So OSU-Boise State might be the Big 12’s best offering Saturday, and it’s a wonderful matchup. A rock’ em/sock ‘em showdown of teams that have built national brands in the last decade. Boise State with more than its blue field, OSU with more than its Imelda Marcos closet of uniforms. [NewsOK]

Eventually picking the Pokes to win by two (31-29), the writer had some fascinating comments – that Boise is the biggest non-con game in Stillwater since 2009 and justifying the pick by noting Boise’s av-ur-age record against Power Five teams on the road.

Difference in Construction

Ian Boyd had an interesting explanation (and a depressing prediction I won’t quote) on the differences between how Oklahoma State and Boise State built college football brands not on recruiting stars but talent development.

The name of the game in Boise is nearly opposite to Mike Gundy’s approach to building top teams in Stillwater. At Oklahoma State they look for players that have high level athleticism and potential and then they mold them into football players over years of development in their system and schemes. The Gundy offense is designed to squeeze as much value as possible out of a small number of offensive concepts by using tempo, a field general QB, and spread spacing and balance.

Boise looks for versatile football players, guys that may not have any elite measurables but are solid or good at a large number of skills and then they build multi-use tools on either side of the ball that allow them to methodically break opponents down with ever-shifting formations, concepts, and leverages. I’d add cerebral, multi-sport athletes that like the quiet life on Stillwater but that may not differentiate from the types of guys they like in Idaho.
