• After Mason Rudolph put together a stellar debut (with meaningful snaps), the local media is calling for the beginning of the Mason Rudolph Era in Pittsburgh.
If Rudolph had played the entire game Sunday, as opposed to just the second half, the Steelers likely would have won. And I also believe had the defense been able to get one last stop — the Seahawks ran the final 5:34 off the clock — and got Rudolph the ball back, he would have led them all the way to the win.
Rudolph just looks like he gets it, and he has that “it” factor. He is poised and intelligent and the team rallied around him. He is clearly a natural leader, and he is a really talented passer to boot. [Pitssburgh Post Gazette]
The basis for his argument is threefold – he’s a spark for the new guard to grow with (out with LeVeon Bell and Antonio Brown, in with James Conner and Juju Smith-Schuster), a playmaker on third downs, and a capable leader.
This was fun too – now Rudolph has more touchdown throws this year than Baker Mayfield!
I don’t think he’s wrong, look at these plays.

• I won’t pretend to know what’s important in developing a Big 12 season-ready team, but this narrative that Tulsa leads to better Texas performance sounds good to me.
But after soft opening games against Oregon State and McNeese State, where so much came easy, the Cowboys needed a slap upside the Pistol Pete logo adorning the white lids Saturday. They needed some adversity, a test of will, before heading to Texas for the Big 12 opener.
Tulsa provided that, even carrying a second-half lead, before the Pokes responded, revealing some toughness and character.
Now, on to Austin. [GoPokes]
I just wonder if the defense would look completely different with all of the players out for Tulsa were back in. Guys like Devin Harper, Calvin Bundage, and Israel Antwine will probably remain out but give me Brandon Evers back at a minimum.
• Either way, it was nice to win a game in a new way on Saturday.
“I feel better now than I have in all these other games we’re in,” (Mike) Gundy said in a cramped interview room. “It’s nice for the defense to basically win the game, and that’s what they did.” [NewsOK]
Tulsa is hardly a Kingsbury-coached offense, but they were a great opportunity for a short-handed defense to take a stand and build some confidence.
• Man, this Haisten tweet from the weekend had me spooling. Chuba’s numbers have been legendary. I wouldn’t project that many (any?) Big 12 defenses will be able to slow him down too much either.
#okstate In his last seven games, Chuba Hubbard has run for 947 yards and 12 TDs. If that 135-yard average were sustained over a 13-game season, it would result in 1,755 yards. That figure has been achieved only by Barry Sanders, Terry Miller, Ernest Anderson and Thurman Thomas.

• This Iowa State snafu from Saturday night was hilarious and gutwrenching – depending on your CFB allegiances
