Defense Wins Championships

Oklahoma State’s way-too-early title-contending hopes are now being shaped by rare circumstances in Stillwater:

Perhaps the biggest story coming out of Oklahoma State’s win, however, was its defense. Under the direction of new coordinator Jim Knowles, whom Mike Gundy hired away from Duke this winter, the Cowboys currently lead the country with 16 sacks in three games after notching seven against Boise State. Eight different players have at least half a sack.

Oklahoma State is getting pressure off the edge from defensive ends Jordan Brailford and Calvin Bundage and dominating out-of-conference offensive lines. Right now the unit appears to be the most lethal in the Big 12, having just held the Broncos to 34 rushing yards on 31 attempts. [SportsIllustrated]

“Right now the unit appears to be the most lethal in the Big 12” – my goodness. You don’t see stuff like the below popping up in OSU’s favor too often but these are the days we’re living in.

Vegas Darlings

After seeing the Pokes flip from favorites to underdogs, popular sentiment is now trending strongly in their favor.

Another college football pick you should be all over on Saturday: Oklahoma State (-13) covers against Texas Tech. That spread opened at -12, but has since gone up a point.

The Cowboys are coming off an extremely impressive win against a top-20 Boise State squad, and they enter conference play with a date against a Texas Tech defense that has struggled mightily this year. The Red Raiders gave up 47 points to Ole Miss in Week 1 and 49 to Houston in Week 3.

The model is calling for huge numbers across the board for the Cowboys, including 350 yards and three touchdowns for quarterback Taylor Cornelius. Oklahoma State covers in 60 percent of simulations, and there’s value on the Under (77) as well because that also hits 60 percent of the time. [CBS Sports]

Last week the Cowboys were so unproven, unknown with a new quarterback and a new defensive coordinator. It’s hard for folks to not be excited about what they saw.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Overall an encouraging response from Cowboy fans on the Daxcision….Cowboys over Boise one of the most impactful losses in college football….HCS interviewed Cowboy great Zac Robinson….Check out the bottom 25 of college football….Doesn’t look like Netflix will be bidding on Big 12 games anytime soon

Have to think this would be a win for the Pokes. Another shot at Oregon or taking on Leach’s Cougars would be fun.

Woof – the next time you think you’re having a bad day.

Good luck to Mason Cox in the AFL semi’s.
