Best Bowl Performances

Max Olson says OSU when it comes to the Big 12.

I’ll go with Oklahoma State. The Cowboys put together a thoroughly dominant performance from start to finish against Colorado in all phases. I don’t think less of that Colorado team after covering the game. The Buffaloes had an incredible season and deserved to be in the top 10 in the final College Football Playoff rankings. I expected a competitive, back-and-forth ballgame. That should’ve been one of the best bowls of the season. But Oklahoma State was just way too good and showed us why 2017 could be another huge year for the Pokes. [ESPN]

I think this is probably the right way to look at it. Colorado was really good, not great. OSU has to figure out how to beat great teams.

That Denton pipeline

Good stuff here from Kyle F. on another Denton football player coming to Stilly.

Should Mwaniki’s commitment hold until National Singing Day on Feb. 1, he’ll be the fifth Guyer alum since 2011 to play for the Cowboys, joining J.W. Walsh, Josh Stewart, Jimmy Bean and Dominic Ramacher. What separates Mwaniki from his counterparts is a rare versatility. [NewsOK]

Flower Mound in hoops. Denton in football.

Joe Mixon, gone

Interesting stuff here from Jason LaCanfora.

Mixon said he reached a final decision to declare for the NFL only very recently. He has been discussing the option for a while with his family and those he trusts, and reached a final conclusion around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Four hours later he was at the airport, flying from California to Oklahoma in an effort to present the decision in person to coach Bob Stoops before word leaked in any other fashion. After all the Sooner staff did for him, including welcoming him back to the team after all he put them through, Mixon figured it was the least he could do.

“I just thought it was only right to see Coach Stoops face to face,” Mixon said. “I felt like I owed that to him, to talk to him man-to-man and let him know how much I appreciated how much he’s done for me, he and the program and everybody who stood by me. I felt it was only right to tell him … [CBS]

I’m with Carson. I think a team will draft Mixon high, and I think he will be a star.

Make CFB great again

Leave it to Nate Silver to come up with a high school debate-style solution to this sport.

The solution that debate tournaments devised is something called power-pairing. Power-pairing just means that teams with the same record are paired off against each other, so that a team that starts off the tournament 2-0 will face off against another 2-0 team, for instance. It usually works by drawing the first two rounds of a tournament at random,1 and after that, everything is power-paired. [538]

It’s too complex to work, but I like the way he’s thinking.
