Homecoming

Goodness. Minutes later, Niki screamed so loud she couldn’t hear the squadron of helicopters descending on the intersection, so terrified she thought the nightmare wouldn’t end, so beside herself she couldn’t feel the rotor wash whipping her hair and blood-stained clothes as the helicopter carried her son away forever. Bob Huggins on Brad Underwood: “Brad will get guys in there who love to play. He’s got a really good way with players.” [Tulsa World]

Vincent Taylor on rooming with Mote Maile: “To get me going in the morning, I’ll say, ‘give me your laptop,’ because he travels with his laptop. I’ll put New Orleans music on it and we’ll start jamming out to that. That’s what gets me going. But when we’re in a chill mood, we’ll play his music, island music. It is very relaxing.” [Go Pokes — $]

Ranking all 99 of Mike Gundy’s wins. Top five here are OU for Big 12 title, Stanford in Fiesta Bowl, at OU in 2014, at Mizzou in 2008 and at A&M in 2011. [Go Pokes — $]

Hoops News

Brad Underwood on Jawun and Forte: “I’m not saying where they’re at, but if they’re not in the top-10 in the country as a combo, then I’d hate to see the other guys who are better.” [NewsOK]

Phil Forte on helping freshmen: “I’m trying to teach them anything I can, whether it’s on the court or off the court. I’ve been in their shoes before. I remember when I came in, Markel [Brown] was that way for me. I remember how overwhelming it can be. When you first get here in summer there’s class, then there’s the first practice, … then conference play starts. There’s so much that goes on that first year. I just try to help them any way I can and help build that culture that Coach Underwood wants.” [CRFF]

Other Sports

OSU won its final home soccer game of the season. [okstate]

John Smith on the season: “As we go into this season, there is really a mix of age groups. It appears there could be three, up to four freshmen,. starting for us. One thing I do like is that probably half of my starting team will be half from Oklahoma and half from out of state.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had that. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but it is a sign that in-state wrestling is pretty strong. It gives us a chance to pick up in-state kids and we’ve always felt comfortable doing that. They are closer to the program.” [Go Pokes — $]
