DeQuinton Osborne Could Be OSU’s next Defensive Draft Pick
Aside from all the talk about where Mason Rudolph and James Washington will go in the 2018 NFL Draft, it seems NFL scouts are keeping tabs on a few other Cowboy players as well.
During his Monday press conference, Coach Gundy mentioned that when pro scouts are visiting the program, one player they continue to ask about is defensive tackle DeQuinton Osborne.
“We have a lot of NFL people that come around this year because of players on our team that could potentially be high round picks,” said Gundy. “So you get a number of NFL people in, and they all ask about him because of his ability to get under blocks.”
It’s not surprising scouts are noticing the JUCO transfer. In an expanded role through just five games, Osborne is shining, already matching or beating many of stats from last year.
Year | Tackles | Solo | Assisted | TFL | Sacks | Forced Fumbles | Fumbles Recovered | Int | Int Yards |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2016 | 12 | 10 | 2 | 5.5 | 3.5 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 27 |
2017 | 15 | 9 | 6 | 6 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
“He has worked hard, and he has been a really good football player…. He’s quick, he can make a play and he plays really hard,” Gundy said.
Osborne has been consistent all season, getting into the backfield at least once a game to record a tackle for loss. He’s nearly matched his sack total from last season after recording his third of the year against Texas Tech.
Osborne had an interesting road to Oklahoma State, bouncing around from Missouri to the junior college ranks before finally landing in Stillwater last season.
“They put his information on my desk in May or so a year ago,” Gundy said on Monday. “We did our research and talked to the people back home and really liked him, not only as a player. When we did that research on him we felt like he was a quality young man and that he would be good for our culture. We decided to bring him in and since then he has been terrific.”
There was a lot of concern coming into the season that OSU wouldn’t have a premier, NFL-caliber lineman after the departure of Vincent Taylor. Osborne has done enough so far to calm some of those concerns with an impressive start to the season. If he continues to produce at this rate, he’ll not only get drafted next April, he could go higher than any of us expected before the season started.
