Dez Bryant Wants to Return Punts Again for the Dallas Cowboys

When Dez Bryant entered the league in 2010, he earned his stripes as one of the best punt returners in the NFL. Now, after firmly establishing himself as one of the top receivers in the world, he’s hoping to return to fielding punts again.

“I’m always in Coach Bisaccia’s ear,” Bryant told the Dallas News referring to Rich Bisaccia, the Cowboys special teams coach. “That’s why I’m back there practicing [catching punts]. I’m going to get me one of them, I’m telling you. I’m going to crib it. I’m telling you I’m going to score.”

As a rookie for Dallas, Dez fielded 15 punts for 215 yards. He even scored his first TD as a Dallas Cowboy on a punt return. But as his role as a receiver grew with the team, his reliance as a returner decreased in order to keep him fresh and healthy for the original role the team drafted him to fill.

Although Bryant is persistent, it’d be pretty surprising for the team to decide the risk is worth the reward in putting him back there. Dallas drafted fourth round talent Ryan Switzer, a North Carolina football alum, to compete for that role this season. And with Lucky Whitehead still with the team, it’s more of a wish than a reality.

Maybe Dez will get reps eventually, but it seems he’s likely far down on the pecking order.

For now, Dez is assigned to do Dez things: Like grabbing #DakBombs for Dallas as the team looks to build off its heartbreaking divisional round loss to the Green Bay Packers.
