Both Oklahoma State’s baseball and softball teams were in action on Saturday.

The Cowboys showed up in style and were able to bounce back and tie things up, while the Cowgirls dropped their series finale. Let’s take a look at how it went down for both teams in the diamond.

Baseball: OSU 5, Baylor 3

BOXSCORE

The Cowboys evened up the series following up a 6-4 loss on Friday with a 5-3 win on Saturday — even if there was some late-game drama.

Oklahoma State donned special commemorative uniforms for Folds of Honor, and they were able to play up to the clean look.

Aidan Meola’s eighth home run of the year put the Pokes on the board in the second and then Brock Thompson added a two-run moonshot in the third to make it 3-0.

The Bears added two runs in the top of fifth, but Garrett Shull homered in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2. Alex Conover added to the lead with an RBI double in the seventh.

After giving up two late runs in the Cowboys’ loss on Friday, Stormy Rhodes got the chance to redeem himself.

Rhodes came in for the ninth and got the save even if it looked dicey for a minute. With OSU up 5-2 entering the ninth inning, Rhodes allowed a double by Baylor’s Ty Johnson, his first batter faced before striking out one. The second out came on foul out by Brady Janusek.

Then it looked like the wheels might come off when Baylor’s Tyce Armstrong drilled one to centerfield. Kolin Ritchie had the game-ending out on a pop fly right in front of him but just lost it and the ball bounced off the warning track. Johnson would score from second base and Armstrong had the double. Then the Bears’ pinch runner advanced to third on a wild pitch by Rhodes before he struck out Hunter Snow swinging to seal the win.

Mario Pesca improved to 2-2, pitching five 2/3 innings, allowing two walks and two runs and striking out eight Bears. Kai Fyke pitched two 1/3 inning with a walk and two Ks.

With the win, the Pokes move to 15-8 on the season and 1-4 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys and Bears will meet up for the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday in O’Brate Stadium.

Softball: BYU 7, OSU 3

BOXSCORE

The Cowgirls earned their first Big 12 series win on Friday with a run-rule victory over BYU, but their bats had cooled off by Saturday.

Oklahoma State mustered just three runs in the series finale after a 6-0 win in Game 1 and a 10-0 win in just five innings in Game 2. And those runs didn come in the traditional manner.

Claire Timm got the Cowgirls on the board when she stole home in the first. Then Jayden Jones scored from second on a fielding error in the second. The third run came on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, sending Karli Godwin home.

After Ruby Meylan gave up just one hit in five innings on Thursday and pitching a solo perfect game on Friday, the Cowgirls’ pitching staff (including Meylan) gave up some runs on Saturday.

Preslee Downing got the start in the circle for the Cowgirls but gave up two runs in the first inning and then only lasted the second before OSU went to RyLee Crandall. Crandall took the loss and moved to 6-3 on the season after giving up three runs over just the third inning and one batter into the fourth.

Meylan spelled Crandall in the fourth and pitched the rest of the way. Despite the Cougars scoring three in the fourth, Meylan didn’t allow another run. The Cowgirls just couldn’t get enough offense to get back in it. In four total innings she allowed two runs and struck out four.

With the loss, the Cowgirls move to 21-10 and 4-5 in Big 12 play. They’ll head to Tulsa for a midweek game against the Golden Hurricane at 5 p.m. on Wednesday before a weekend series at Utah starting Friday.
