Dillon Stoner Enjoys Career Day during Sendoff of Seniors

While the Cowboys drummed the Big 12’s worst football franchise 58-17 on their home finale, most eyes were upon a pair of future pro wideouts playing on Lewis Field one last time. The duo didn’t disappoint. James Washington racked up 106 yards and a score and Marcell Ateman best him with 107 on four catches and the pair made some history.

But it was a redshirt freshman who led the way on Senior Day. Dillon Stoner reeled in all four of his targets for a team-leading 113 yards and a score. That score came on the unquestioned non-Senior play of the day, his 76-yard touchdown from Mason Rudolph.

“I remember there was times in his freshman year I was kind of uneasy throwing him the ball,” Rudolph told PFB. “I was like ‘Is this guy ready? Is he a little fearful?’ but just from the way he’s progressed the whole season, he’s going to be a special guy.

“He’s got a little [Wes] Welker, a little [Danny] Amendola, a little [Julian] Edelman in him and I think he’s got the mentality to go with it. He’s a fighter, so it’ll be fun.”

Whether or not Stoner follows his senior QB and wideout mentors to the NFL like the super-slot receivers Rudolph compared him to is yet to be seen, but his abilities have never been in question according his head coach.

“He’s always played really well, we just couldn’t get the ball to him,” explained Gundy about his embarrassment of riches at wide receiver.

“We don’t really have enough footballs to go around. But he’s been playing very well. We’d like to take a lot (of guys) like him.”

One of Stoner’s mentors in the receivers meeting room should be America’s next Biletnikoff winner. And he’s been impressed with the Jenks native from Day 1.

“I’m very proud of that guy,” said James Washington after the freshman out-gained him on his Senior Day. “You know, since he came in, he’s been a hard worker, so it’s not like he shocked me with his effort because I always knew he had it in him. From stadiums, to 200s, to lifting in the weight room, he’s always been a guy that’s hit it hard every single time.

“I’m looking forward to see what he does in these next few years. ”

So are we.
