The Cowboys finally landed a transfer portal target, and it was a big one.

Former East Carolina point guard Javon Small announced his commitment to Oklahoma State via his Instagram account on Sunday.

Of the several transfer targets that the Cowboys reportedly reached out to, Small was one of the earliest. He visited Stillwater earlier in April and had whittled his list of suitors down to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma as of last week. And he was back in Stillwater on Friday. Small was the No. 22 ranked uncommitted player in the transfer portal at the time of this announcement.

With the Cowboys saying goodbye to Avery Anderson and Caleb Asberry, Small immediately checks two boxes that were a priority for Mike Boynton this offseason — playmaking and 3-point shooting.

The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged 15.8 points per game to go with 5.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 33% from deep. His 35.5% assist rate ranked among the Top 20 for all Division I players. And though he missed half the season with a knee injury, his assist total exceeded OSU’s dime leader last year, Bryce Thompson, who played in twice as many games.

OSU’s incoming 2023 class is currently ranked 12th but is frontcourt-heavy with Brandon Garrison, Eric Dailey and Justin McBride the three four-stars. Adding a veteran guard like Small should be a boon for the Cowboys this fall.
