Eddie Sutton’s Career By the Numbers
A look back at Eddie Sutton’s jaw-dropping career.
Basketball lost one of its all-time great coaches on all levels Friday night.
Eddie Sutton’s passing leaves behind a long list of numbers that only elite-level future coaches would dream of matching. Here is a breakdown of just some of those numbers.
806:Â Sutton’s 806 wins ranks ninth all time after Bob Huggins (809) passed him this past season.
368:Â Sutton won 368 games at Oklahoma State
2: Sutton had just two seasons below .500.
7:Â Oppose that last stat with the fact that he coached eight teams to a win percentage above .800.
26:Â In his 37 years at the DI level, Sutton teams went to the national tournament on 26 occasions.
13:Â Sutton took OSU to 13 NCAA Tournaments in his 16 seasons as the Cowboys’ coach.
6:Â Sutton took six OSU teams to the Sweet 16.
3:Â He took three OSU teams to the Elite Eight.
2:Â He took two OSU teams to the Final Four.
4:Â Sutton was the first coach to lead four schools (Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and OSU) to the national tournament.
4:Â Sutton won the national coach of the year four times.
8:Â He was named a conference coach of the year eight times.
118-53: One of the most inspiring things about Sutton’s career from a broad scope is that he had to work his way up the coaching ladder. Before the 806 wins at the Division-I level, Sutton spent seven seasons coaching at Tulsa Central High School. There he went a combined 118-53 including a 25-1 1964-65 season.
84-14: After those seven years coaching high schoolers, Sutton worked his way up to the junior college ranks. He spent three seasons at Southern Idaho, going a combined 84-14. That’s a .857 win percentage.
1,006:Â Sutton has 1,006 wins as a head coach counting his years spent below the DI level.
