Ethan Fang Ends Opening Round at The Masters as Low Amateur
Fang is two shots up on the amateur field through one round.
So far, so good as it pertains to Ethan Fang sitting in Butler Cabin on Sunday.
A junior at Oklahoma State, Fang shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round of The Masters, which was best among amateurs. It’s a score that ties for 40th overall with Fang being tied with Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg and others.
“Yeah, it’s only the first day,” Fang said. “I try not to think of it like that. Just going to go out there tomorrow and try to play my best. …
“I think I hit it really good off the tee. I think that’s a big part of this golf course is driving it well and then hitting greens out there. But, yeah, I would say that’s probably the biggest thing that helped me keep it in contention.”
Fang parred the opening two holes before birdieing the third. He closed the front nine at even-par with a birdie in the nineth. Fang held steady up until the 14th, where he bogeyed before bogeying again on the 16th.
He’s two shots up on the next closest amateur (Jackson Harrington).
“Yeah, this course is really tricky,” Fang said. “These greens are — they’re glass. I had so many chip shots today that you barely get it on the green and it rolls all the way to the hole. I think it’s all about missing in the right spot, just giving yourself a good chance if you miss the green to get it close, and maybe make par and bogey. The biggest thing is just avoid doubles, and there’s plenty of birdie chances out there, but yeah.”
Fang finished the first round third among Cowboys in the field, trailing Sam Stevens and Wyndham Clark, who are tied for 17th at an even-par 72.
