Film Study: David Sills Creates Matchup Problem for Cowboys

Published

on

The Oklahoma State Cowboys will face one of the best duos in the conference on Saturday when they take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. WVU’s Will Grier and David Sills V have accounted for more than 30 percent of the Mountaineer’s touchdowns in their first season together. Sills has quickly become one of the better receivers in WVU history, and he’s already second in all-time touchdown receptions. He has the potential to be the difference maker against a young OSU secondary.

Sills initially came to West Virginia as a four-star quarterback recruit, but he transferred to El Camino College in California when it became clear he wouldn’t receive any playing time. Sills transferred back to WVU and immediately made an impact after switching to wide receiver. He’s quickly become a premier possession receiver and the connection between him and Grier has helped the Mountaineers stay in the Big 12 title hunt.

Sills has an uncanny ability to use his 6-4 size and high point the ball.

Sills’ ability to do so in the red zone has helped him become the nation’s leader with 15 touchdown receptions.

He also has adequate speed after the catch, and he averages over 16 yards per reception:

Sills leads the nation in points scored with 92. SMU’s Courtland Sutton, the next wide receiver on the list, has 60 points. There has only been one game this season where Sills hasn’t scored multiple touchdowns, and he’s already reached the three-touchdown mark three times. Grier is a good quarterback in his own right, but Sills’ impact on the Mountaineer offense can’t be overstated. OSU will likely try and keep Sills in front of them but he still has the potential to be a difference-maker when singled up in the red zone. The Cowboy corners will have to step up and play with physicality to limit his impact, but that strategy will be difficult to incorporate against one of the biggest receiving threats in the conference.
