Final Notes and Thoughts On Oklahoma State’s 31-20 Win Over Virginia Tech

The bowl is over, another 10 wins are in the book and my 10 thoughts are posted. But it’s time to empty my notebook of all the inane things I wrote down during OSU’s 18th bowl victory on Thursday evening in Orlando. Let’s get to it.

• Ralph Friedgen is still the only ACC coach to win 20 in his first two seasons. Justin Fuente failed to get to that number on Thursday night.

• I loved that they played the Ready for War intro from BPS to lead OSU out onto the field. That was awesome.

• Yassss.

• Also great: Rickie Fowler’s win at the Honda Classic being replayed on Golf Channel as OSU was taking the field in Orlando.

• Another great thing: This song (apologies if this is universally considered not a great song. I’m old and have kids, and I don’t care. I liked that they showed it with Washington and Hill in the intro).

• OSU threw its first pass of the game to Britton Abbott. If we wagered on the Camping World Bowl like we do the Super Bowl, this would have been approximately 300-1. At one point Abbott had 2 catches for 32 yards and Washington had 1 for 0 yards. What a world.

• OSU’s captains wore the C on their jerseys on Thursday. I like the marshal badge better. It always felt unique. This just felt like somebody looked up the Boston Bruins’ unis and said, “do that.”

• Clemson scored 31 on Virginia Tech. OSU scored 30.

• Dying.

• A thing that was said in our Slack chat ruding the game: “Kicking from the Camping World logo is all you need to know about the 2017 Cowboys.”

• If you played a drinking game revolving around the announcers saying “lunch pail defense” and “high powered offense,” I hope you updated your will.

• Calvin Bundage thought the Camping World Bowl meant he could actually set up camp in the neutral zone and not be penalized.

• VT came into the game averaging 1.98 points per drive and scored 1.9 without their best receiver and running back. Not great, but also not horrendously awful, either.

• VT does a bunch of misdirection with a lot of unathletic dudes. It seemed like OSU was incredibly undisciplined early on. Here is a microcosm.

• I have to be honest here. I was not fired up to see promotional videos showing fans and players celebrating the Camping World Bowl. The 10 wins thing is great. Beating VT is great. Camping World week isn’t all that great, not for this team.

• I love defensive tackles wearing single digits. Love it!

• Forever!

• Rather than being frustrated when Green and Rodarius were ejected from the game on the same play, my first thought was “it’s kind of a miracle that they stayed healthy all year up to this point.

• This was awesome.

• If I’m a big company in Oklahoma, I pay Ramon $100,000 to be the secretary for my CEO. The second he walks through the door, something insanely fortuitous is going to happen to my company.

• Marcell Ateman had one of the underrated seasons in OSU history. He had the 10th-most receiving yards ever!

• Virginia Tech went on an 18-play, 82-yard drive. Without their best receiver. And their best running back. Virginia Tech. Eighteen plays. Eighty-two yards.

• True or false: LD Brown is going to be the best fourth-string running back on the planet next year?

• Who was the freak wearing No. 13 catching passes from No. 2? Is he a walk-on? Has he played this year? He seems good.

• OSU seemed to be in a new kickoff formation. Or maybe I haven’t been paying attention.

• Freak!

• I see why Clemson is undefeated if this is the caliber of offense they’re facing every week.

• A thing the color guy for ESPN said about chop blocks: “Some say it’s part of the game for a long time.” Wut?

• Hahahaha.

• Feels like every time Rudolph scrambles, all he’s thinking is “where is Marcell?”

• Josh Jackson can throw it a little bit. If I’m a VT fan, I’m pushing my lunch pails to the middle of the table.

• The short side runs with Justice …

• Another thing that was said in Slack about Gundy’s end of half clock management: I think he got so caught up in not taking a knee to end the half that he made sure VT couldn’t either.

• Gundy said Rudolph is the most NFL-ready guy OSU has ever had? Eh?

• Two more years of this!

• Why is the end zone font for OSU always different every year?

• Only West Virginia gained more yards than OSU did against VT, and nobody gained more yards per play than OSU’s 7.8.

• Stoner can hit!

• I sort of loved the Golden Tate comp for Washington. I don’t know if that’s what he’ll turn out to be, but I’m here for it.

This was so good.

• How mad are announcers when Sione Fiinefeuiaki makes plays? I would be exasperated.

• Speaking of Sione, the 4th down play to him was both 1. A pick play and 2. Six points if he’d caught it.

• Oklahoma State: 16 chunk plays (10+ yards). Virginia Tech: 18 chunk plays. NOT GOOD!

• I thought it was cool that Darius Curry got himself an interception in his last college game. We don’t talk much about guys like that, but that’s something he’ll remember forever.

• Tyron didn’t do much on his personal foul penalty. Also Tyron sort of looks like Michael B. Jordan if you’ve had a few beers and the camera doesn’t zoom in on him.

• OSU had two 100-yard receivers against VT. The other 12 teams they’ve faced have had three combined.

• Virginia Tech ran 29 (!) more plays than Oklahoma State.

• V bad.

• OK, we’ve seen enough. There needs to be a force field at goal line to determine touchdowns. This is a billion-dollar industry — 24 ESPN cameras isn’t getting it done.

• OSU kind of put the game on Justice Hill late, didn’t they? I loved it.

• Did Beth Mowins change clothes at halftime?

• This was how Matt Ammendola’s field goal stayed true, I presume.Q2Wk6Fg.jpg

• Yo.
