Final Notes and Thoughts on Oklahoma State’s Win Over Kansas

Published

I posted my 10 thoughts on OSU-Kansas earlier today, but wanted to empty out my notes on the 2017 season. Here they are on OSU’s 58-17 win over KU.

• Gundy definitely calls players who walk out on Senior Day by their number, right? Love you, thirty-one, thanks for your time here.

• Speaking of Senior Day, nothing makes me feel older or more mortal than college kids I’ve been covering for 4-5 years graduating.

• Mason Rudolph and Brad Lundblade led OSU’s team out of the tunnel on Saturday. I thought that was pretty cool. Not totally sure why, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen those two do it.

• This is pretty impressive.

• This year had to be the most underwhelming 9-3 season in Big 12 history. Texas would be throwing a parade emceed by Rick Perry if it went 9-3. In Stillwater, it felt more like 3-9 than it did 9-3. Strange times.

• Everything is just so much easier against Kansas. Mistakes aren’t as stark. You can make up for slight slips. In the first quarter, Ramon Richards batted down a ball intended for the receiver he was covering that looked like it took as much effort as grabbing a loaf of bread off the top shelf. Kansas football, everybody!

• The crowd wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. All things considered — coming off the KSU loss, Thanksgiving weekend, a 4-67 team in its last 71 Big 12 games, OSU with nothing to play for — I thought it was actually pretty good. The only big no-shows were students, and I can’t really blame them for that, either, as most of them hadn’t come back from Thanksgiving break.

• A take: I like the kiss cam.

• Another take: Calvin Bundage will get another targeting on him before the end of his career.

• I love old jerseys that are now new jerseys. That 14 somebody was rocking on Saturday? Bobby Reid turned Taylor Cornelius. All the generational spans.

• For being a senior that has won 31 games, Rudolph sure still throws behind a lot of people. I said this last week, but his trajectory has not been what I thought it would be.

• The Joker.

• Tyron Johnson was very friendly with a lot of folks from KU. He got touched more in pregame warmups and timeouts than he did during the game.

• There is an understandable of OSU running flea-flickers and going four wide against Kansas instead of against TCU or OU.

• Gundy lost it in the third quarter. LOST IT.

• The Kansas sideline celebration at the end of the first half when the Jayhawks scored a TD was incredible. Beaty and Doug Meacham were hugging each other like they’d just been selected for the fourth CFP spot.

• Oh no.

• Mark Helfrich compared Rudolph to Kirk Cousins. Said he’s better than Baker (at least for the next level). ?

• That is a statistic.

• Rudolph was trying to force it to Washington at the end for the all-time receiving yards record. I don’t blame him. They earned much more than that.

• Two sets that would have been fun earlier in the year.

• I sometimes forget I’m not on a delay when I’m there in person. People keep tweeting things that I think are a reference to future events before I realize that there cannot possibly be a future event beyond what I’m seeing with my eyes.

• Oklahoma State scored double digits in every quarter.

• Kansas had zero answers for Washington. Nothing. No clues. They basically just tackled him on every play and thought, “Hope the refs didn’t see that one.”

• Stoner and Washington have a very proper and firm handshake celebration that is just the best. Straight business. Why do they do it? Washington said after the game he calls Stoner The Lawyer because he thinks he looks like one (noted his hair). So they go straight business on the field.

• Oil Baron to Tyrell Alexander was tasty. I’m kind of in on the Oil Baron, I think. Let’s make t-shirts. Let’s do this. *Spencer Sanders scores six TDs in the first game next year*

• OSU averaged 7.7 yards per play on Saturday. Kansas averaged 3.9.

• Not to bring this up again, but I believe this is just the second time Oklahoma State has ended its regular season with a win since 2011 (the other being Bedlam 2014).
