Steve Lutz has his first commitment as Oklahoma State’s basketball coach.

Florida International transfer Arturo Dean announced his commitment to the Cowboys on Wednesday, shortly after a visit to Stillwater. Listed at 5-foot-11, 163 pounds, Dean averaged 13.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, four assists and 3.4 steals a game last season as a sophomore. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“Arturo is a great young man from a great family and has been well-coached along the way,” said Lutz in OSU’s release Dean had signed. “He takes tremendous pride in his defense, which isn’t often the case with young players. You don’t get to 100+ steals by accident. That number is a product of hard work, outstanding physical tools and an unrelenting will to win. Cowboy fans are going to love his toughness and the energy that he brings to our team.”

Dean made an instant impact at FIU, playing in 32 games as a freshman, making 23 starts. In that 2022-23 season, he averaged 11.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.5 steals a game en route to earning Conference USA’s Freshman of the Year and a spot on the league’s All-Defensive Team.

This past season, he earned a spot on the All-Conference USA Third Team and another spot on the conference’s All-Defensive Team.

Dean put up a career-high 27 points in a December game against LIU. He went 2-for-5 from deep in that contest while also having six rebounds, four assists and seven steals.

He is a career 26% 3-point shooter, but he makes up for that with his stout defense. Dean already has 185 career steals, including a 10-steal game against Florida Gulf Coast in November. He was the NCAA’s leader in steals this past season.

He has three double-doubles in his career — all with different secondary stats:

19 points, 12 rebounds against Louisiana Tech
10 points, 10 assists against Rice
13 points, 10 steals against FGCU

That’s quite the resume for someone who has just been in college basketball for two seasons.

Dean was a four-star prospect in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. A Miami native, Dean didn’t have any stars coming out of Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut after he led his team to a 38-0 season.

Dean becomes the first recruit of the Lutz era and the first portal pickup the Cowboys have had this offseason. There is still plenty of work to do, as with Dean’s addition, OSU still has eight scholarships available.

Here is what OSU’s roster now looks like at this point:
