Five Things We Learned From the Oklahoma State-Baylor Game

Published

on

Baylor whipped Oklahoma State on Saturday night for the Cowboys’ first loss in 12 months. Here are a few things we learned from the 10-point thumping at the hands of two backup QBs.

1. Baylor’s talent is much better than OSU’s (KP)

I think most of us would have said Baylor had more talent coming into the game, but I can’t remember an outing during the good years of the Mike Gundy era (2008 and on) in which this was more apparent. It was stunning. OSU just got whipped over and over again on both sides of the ball and outraced in the secondary. Kyle, you and I could have tossed a few TDs on Saturday night with the horses Baylor rolled out there. That’s a scary thought for the future considering Art Briles isn’t going anywhere.

2. Running isn’t paramount, but it helps a lot (KP)

Baylor just loaded up and ran it down OSU’s throat all night. It reminded me of what Gundy and Co. would do with leads during the Weeden years and Joe Randle would go for eight a carry almost every time (or that’s what it felt like — both with Randle and Baylor on Saturday). OSU proved that it doesn’t have to have a running game to win 10 times in a season. Baylor proved it makes it a lot easier to do so.

3. This team is still young (KB)

In a game where the Cowboys simply could not get anything going on the ground, Baylor’s veteran presence on the offensive line showed just how valuable a veteran presence can be. The Pokes are still very young on the offensive line with a lot of room to grow, but even key skill players are still relatively young. Guys like James Washington, Chris Lacy, Jeff Carr and Jalen McCleskey all made a big impact, and are all young guys who show great promise.

4. The November Gauntlet is Real (KB)

My pregame talk was something like this:

“Baylor hasn’t won here since Snyder was born!”

I went to the game and it wasn’t even close, Baylor was just the better team on Saturday. The skill players for Baylor were incredible and KD Cannon is a receiver with an incredibly bright future. The gauntlet is just awful, but the important thing to remember is that they’ve got another big one this weekend.

“You can’t allow a loss to be a hangover,” Gundy said to ESPN. “Obviously we’re playing a team (Oklahoma) that beat that team (Baylor). Everybody’s got to get a smile on their face, hard as it is, and go to work.”

5. OSU will panic on offense if you overwhelm them (KP)

That was the first time all season I’ve seen OSU consistently run a series of “crap, we have to score now, let’s go deep and see what happens” plays. They got away with it and hung in the game because The President is The President and Mason Rudolph is really good at football, but it never really resembled what I would call a good plan. Or even a plan at all.
