Five Thoughts On The Big 12: What a Mess

Published

on

Week 2 of the Big 12 power rankings, and Oklahoma State is barely treading water above Kansas and Iowa State. That doesn’t mean all is lost for the rest of the year, but it’s certainly not looking pretty right now. Five thoughts on Week 2 of Big 12 play.

1. Three teams are unbeaten. Three!

We’ve only played two weeks (!) and only Baylor, Texas and West Virginia remain unbeaten. The Big 12 is 11-8 overall! That is embarrassing even including the tough non-conference games played so far (and I’m not including Central Michigan as a tough non-conference game). Your best CFP hope is … uh … Texas, I guess. Or maybe OU?

The problem now is that a tough league really needs one team to probably run the table in conference play (like TCU or OU), and that hasn’t happened since WVU and TCU joined. Texas could potentially lose and still sneak in, but that’s a lot to put on a team that didn’t go to a bowl last year. Same goes for Baylor which only has like 60 dudes on scholarship. Long live the Big 12!

2. The Brody Does Boz

This is literally the only thing I saw from the OU game. It was not the greatest weekend for Russell Westbrook to don a Boz jersey.

3. Texas is away from Austin for a month

Texas took care of UTEP in Austin, but now it goes to Cal, to Oklahoma State and gets OU in Dallas. Big boy stretch right there. If it’s 5-0 after those three games, get the CFP talk cranking (even if it goes 11-1).

4. Texas Tech should only play offense

If Tech proposed that it would just give teams four points on every possession in exchange for getting the ball back, who would say “no” to that scenario? Tech should probably do it, and it would be really difficult for opposing teams to decline four points per possession even against a defense as woeful as Tech’s. This would make Tech games even more intriguing than they already are. I’m in!

5. TCU and OSU might stink

What kind of money line could you have gotten on the under for 15.5 combined wins between TCU and OSU a month ago? What about now? Related: Kenny Hill might not be the smartest QB in the Big 12.

  4. Oklahoma
  5. Texas Tech
  6. Kansas State
  7. TCU
  8. Oklahoma State
