Former Oklahoma State Coach Not Going to Tulane … Current One Still in Play?

Published

on

Doug Meacham was all set to become Tulane’s new head coach after Sonny Cumbie spurned Texas’ $1.3M offer to become its offensive coordinator (which is legitimately the best thing I’ve heard this month).

Aaaaaaaand then 22 minutes later he wasn’t.

The Tulane job seems like a bit of a mess, to be honest. Curtis Luper tweeted out this photo of Meacham later at a dinner, and yeah, that doesn’t look like an interview at Tulane.

So is Mike Yurcich still in play at Tulane? It would appear that he is. Tulane is (allegedly) interviewing Georgia Southern’s coach on Thursday and should come to a decision soon. If I’m betting, I’m betting a lot of money that Yurcich doesn’t get the gig. Mike Gundy doesn’t seem too concerned either way.

“There are a number of coaches who have come through here and then gone on to be very successful (as head coaches),” Gundy told Triple Play Sports. “I’m sure athletic directors and head-coaching headhunters across the country always look to see who we have on our staff as assistants.

“Just like (former Cowboy offensive coordinators Larry Fedora, Holgorsen and Todd Monken), at some point (Yurcich) has to decide what’s best for his family and future.[1. I love Gundy.] If we lose one in that direction, then we bring another coach in. The way we structure offensive football at Oklahoma State will be the same. We’ll bring a new coach in.”
