Former OSU Signee Devon Thomas to be Released Early From Prison

Former OSU running back signee Devon Thomas is expected to be released from prison early after a judge modified his sentence on Wednesday, according to a report from the Tulsa World.

Thomas is serving a 10-year sentence for a series of 2014 and 2015 charges related to two armed robberies. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced last August.

As a member of OSU’s heralded 2014 recruiting class (a class that featured Tyreek Hill, James Washington, Ramon Richards, Zach Sinor and others), Thomas — a four-star recruit from Broken Arrow — joined Mason Rudolph and Devante Averette as early enrollees who arrived on campus to compete in the spring. But off-field issues and a summer arrest prompted him to be removed from the team before the 2014 season began.

According to the Tulsa World report citing details from the affidavits related to the crimes, Thomas held a man at gunpoint and took his clothes and money in May 2014. In the July 2015 crime, Thomas was described to have pointed a gun at a motorist and demanded to give him everything. He then pulled the motorist out of the vehicle and beat him until he lost consciousness.

Thomas was originally committed to the University of Oklahoma for a brief 3-week period at the end of 2013, but flipped his decision from the Sooners to the Cowboys in December 2013. He also held offers from Clemson, West Virginia and Houston, and was considered the best prospect in the state at his position.
