Now that the season is over, we can take a final look at where the OSU football program is. I used the ratings from the smartest guys covering college football, @bcfremeau and @SBN_BillC. I took their combined rating system, F+, and used my “what have you done for me lately” weighting system:

2012: 40%
2011: 30%
2010: 20%
2009: 10%

Overall

1) Alabama 1.4
2) Oregon 4.6
3) LSU 7.3
4) Stanford 8.8
5) Oklahoma 9.1
6) Florida State 11.5
7) Oklahoma State 11.9
8) Boise State 12.1
9) Wisconsin 12.3
10) Notre Dame 15.7
11) Georgia 15.8
12) Texas A&M 17.1
13) Florida 17.2
13) TCU 17.2
15) Ohio State 18.4
16) South Carolina 18.7
17) Michigan State 19.2
18) Nebraska 20.9
19) USC 21.0
20) Virginia Tech 24.8
21) Clemson 25.9
22) Michigan 26.5
23) Texas 27.2
24) Kansas State 29.8
25) Arkansas 32.8

OSU’s 12th place finish in this year’s F+ ratings kept the program in the 4-year top 10. It’s still staggering for me to see us ranked so highly in college football. How about Texas as the 23rd best program over the past four years, which happens to include a year that they appeared in the national championship game?

Offense

1) Alabama 8.3
2) Oregon 10.1
3) Baylor 13.2
4) Wisconsin 14.4
5) Georgia 15.4
6) Michigan 16.3
7) Arkansas 18.3
8) Texas A&M 18.9
9) Notre Dame 19.2
10) Oklahoma State 19.3
11) Stanford 20.0
12) USC 20.6
13) Florida State 21.4
14) Georgia Tech 21.4
15) Oklahoma 24.8
16) Nevada 26.6
17) Arizona 27.1
18) Boise State 27.3
19) Kansas State 27.5
20) Louisville 30.5
21) Clemson 30.9
22) Cincinnati 31.0
23) South Carolina 32.6
24) LSU 33.8
25) West Virginia 34.0

Still in the top 10 (2nd in the Big 12). Does it matter who runs this offense?

Defense

1) Alabama 4.2
2) LSU 6.4
3) Oregon 10.5
4) Boise State 11.9
5) Oklahoma 12.4
6) Florida 12.7
7) South Carolina 13.0
8) TCU 14.8
9) Ohio State 15.8
10) Oklahoma State 19.1
11) Michigan State 19.5
12) Penn State 19.8
13) Virginia Tech 19.9
14) Texas 20.8
15) Notre Dame 21.5
16) Florida State 22.7
17) Stanford 23.6
18) Nebraska 24.3
19) Texas A&M 24.8
20) Georgia 25.8
21) BYU 26.1
22) Wisconsin 28.4
23) Rutgers 29.4
24) Utah 32.2
25) Mississippi State 33.7

Bill Young is PISSED right now. Let’s run through the numbers:

2009: 20th
2010: 27th
2011: 3rd
2012: 27th

Remember, these ratings adjust for the style of play and the strength of the offenses in the Big 12 (maybe too much?). You will never get an average fan to agree to this 4-year ranking for OSU, so I won’t even try. I will say this: OSU is one of only 10 programs to be in the F+ top 30 defenses in each of the past four seasons.

The other programs to accomplish this feat: Bama, LSU, Oregon, Boise, OU, Florida, South Carolina, Ohio State, & VT.
