Game 6 Grades: Purdy Curveball Causes Problems for OSU

Published

on

This was one of those tests you feel ready for. You’ve looked over your study guide the past few days, and you’re feeling good. But, you didn’t put Brock Purdy on your study guide.

Here are my grades from Oklahoma State’s 48-42 loss to Iowa State.

Taylor Cornelius: B

Is the controversial? I wrote about this Saturday night, but Taylor Cornelius was good when he wasn’t scrapping himself off the turf.

Cornelius finished 19-for-33 with 289, four touchdowns and a pick. He also gained 96 rushing yards, but 46 of those were taken away from the seven times he was sacked. He dropped myriad dimes. He didn’t rely on one receiver, as four different guys caught touchdown passes.

Offensive Line: F

This is the first F I’ve handed out this year.

I’ve already mentioned the seven times Cornelius was sacked despite Iowa State having only six in its previous four games combined. To the people who will say that’s just as much Cornelius’ fault than it is the O-Line’s, I give you this: Justice Hill averaged 2.8 yards a carry.

Here’s a summation of the OSU offense.

Defense: D-

Iowa State averaged 17.5 points a game before Saturday. The Cyclones had a season-high 30 points at halftime against OSU.

I really thought about giving OSU’s defense an F, and I probably should’ve. But, I’ll stick with the D- because 1) OSU wasn’t ready for Brock Purdy (I don’t think anybody was). 2) Rodarius Williams’ interception was a thing of beauty.

Chuba Hubbard: B-

Besides one moment, Chuba Hubbard played a solid game.

Hubbard returned four kicks for 102 total yards. He also had two carries where he managed to average 11 yards despite the offensive line deficiencies.

His moment of yikes came when he dove at a defender’s feet in a block attempt. Brian Peavy coolly stepped aside and stripped Cornelius mere moments after he received the snap.

Landon Wolf: B+

Landon Wolf has been a diamond in the rough that has been the past three weeks.

Wolf had a team-high six catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. You can see the chemistry he and Cornelius have after running scout team the past few seasons.
