Glenn Spencer Sees Room For Improvement Ahead Of Matchup With Central Michigan

Despite a strong performance by the Cowboy defense against Southeastern Louisiana, defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer sees lots of room for improvement out of his group after watching the film from the game. Citing missed tackles, bad reads, and some relaxation, Coach Spencer stressed the need to constantly improve in his press conference from Monday.

“Yeah, it’s good to analyze it,” said Spencer. “There’s an old adage that things are never as good as they seem and they’re never as bad as they seem, so between some missed tackles we had in the open field, some bad reads and some guys relaxing a couple of times, it was very close to getting those guys to realize how close we are to being very average, or how close we are to having a good defense. That’s left to be determined by next week’s performance.”

The Cowboys held SE Louisiana to 203 total yards and a single touchdown, while forcing the Lions to go 1-13 on 3^rd downs and 0-3 on 4^th downs in the blowout win. The Cowboys also forced 4 turnovers, all fumbles forced.

They will face a much stiffer test this week against Cooper Rush and Central Michigan. Rush is coming off an impressive 2015 where he was selected 2^nd Team All-MAC, throwing for 3848 yards and 25 touchdowns, along with a 144.7 passer efficiency rating. Compared to the SE Lousiana Lions who threw the ball just 14 times on Saturday, we will see a much clearer picture of where the Cowboy defense and the secondary in particular stands after their match-up this upcoming Saturday with Central Michigan.
