Gundy on Freshman Linebacker Calvin Bundage: “I Don’t See him Redshirting”

Mike Gundy talked with the media after practice on Thursday and answered questions on true freshman linebacker Calvin Bundage, who dramatically chose the Cowboys on signing day in February. The former four-star recruit has earned some buzz coming out of fall camp, and is one of four freshmen I’m betting will see some field as a freshman this year.

Mikey G. spoke really highly of the former Edmond Santa Fe practice and confirmed his plans to play him this year, knowing there’s a learning curve that comes with playing a true freshman.

“Well, he’s aggressive. It’s hard to get a feel for a player that’s just started here until they start playing in games. We feel like he should play this year. I don’t see him redshirting at this point. He’s aggressive enough to play for us.”

And then in typical coach fashion, pumps the brakes hard enough to slam your head on the dash.

“He’s going to make some mistakes. He’s going to make a lot of mistakes. (Sweet!) But I think he’s smart enough and has enough football savvy to fix those mistakes and keep moving forward.”

Bundage is a haaaaarddd hitting linebacker/safety who had a monster senior year. He was a physical specimen who had good enough coverage skills to play safety and is big enough he also came up to play linebacker on occasion. The linebacker corps. is already pretty loaded with talent, but with the case of Bundage it seems he’s a talent too intriguing to redshirt. I’m excited to see what he can bring.
