Gundy Says Gleeson Is Different Than What He Has Had With Past OCs

STILLWATER — Sean Gleeson succeeds a long line of successful offensive coordinators to run the Cowboys’ high-powered offense.

After the first day of fall camp, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said Gleeson was “a little further ahead” of what previous OC Mike Yurcich was in terms of adjusting into OSU’s system upon arrival.

“Princeton’s a little more of a step up than Shippensburg, so I would say maybe it’s a little easier,” Gundy said. “He’s a pretty outgoing, highly intelligent guy. He’s a great communicator, so I see him fitting in. He’s confident in his abilities. He’s going to do what he wants to do. I don’t really mess with him.

“He’s a different coach than some of the other guys I had at that position. He just does things differently, but he has every right to do that. We just let him do his job. He seems to be blending in quicker than the last couple guys.”

You’d think Gundy would want something similar to what he has had in the past with the like of Yurcich, Dana Holgorsen and Todd Monken. All three of those guys had incredibly high-octane offenses that lit up their side of the scoreboard. But the way Gundy talks of his new playcaller, it seems like a good different.

Gleeson has already done solid work off the field, securing the commitment of four-star quarterback Shane Illingworth. And if he is already adjusting better on the field than what Gundy has had in the past, this could turn into a home-run hire.

“His technique and drills and the way he coaches the game and coaches the quarterback is different than the way Mike was, different from what Dana was and Monken and on down the line,” Gundy said. “He just has different things in the ways he teaches and coaches. Ultimately, they’re all trying to get the same goals accomplished, but they go about it differently.”
