Hoops Recruiting Update: OSU Offers Five-Star, Misses on Two Targets

Oklahoma State’s recruiting still has yet to take off for Brad Underwood and his new staff, who have fallen mostly short up to this point recruiting the class of 2017 except for one commitment from top 100 point guard Zach Dawson.

But having just one commit isn’t a huge cause for concern. You know who doesn’t have any commitments for 2017? Kentucky.

Brad Underwood continues to search for top-tier talent, and for that you can’t fault him. He extended another big offer recently to yet another five-star prospect; this time in 2018 point guard Courtney Ramey.

Ramey is a 6-foot-3 prospect with close to 20 offers from St. Louis, home of former OSU coach Travis Ford. He plays for Webster Grove High School, and, according to 247sports.com, the Louisville Cardinal are the favorite early on his recruitment.

It’s not a true apples-to-apples comparison, but thus far, Travis Ford and the SLU program have raked on the recruiting trail, and landed two top prospects whom OSU also was pursuing.

The first came recenty in forward Hasahn French, a 6-foot-7 power forward who is ranked a top 150 prospect. French chose SLU and Travis Ford, and being from Boston, MA, he was reportedly interested in mostly Atlantic 10 schools.

St. Louis also nabbed another top-tier recruit on Wednesday when top 10 five-star power forward Carte’Are Gordon picked the Billikens over a slew of offers that included the Pokes. Gordon is a product of arguably the best AAU program in Mokan Elite, who also boast Div. I prospect Trae Young, who is set to visit OSU this weekend. Gordon is one of the best in 2018 from St. Louis who elected to stay close to home.

Again, it’s not a true apples-to-apples comparison in recruiting. While Ford has had the ability to recruit top-talent for years, Underwood is relatively new to head-hunting the nations best, taking a considerable step up in scouting from his days at SFA.

It’s understandable to be concerned about just one commitment to date, but Underwood continues to scour the Earth for elite recruits and isn’t settling at this point. A lot of recruits, including Norman North five-star Trae Young, will likely make their college decisions after seeing the product on the court.

For Brad Underwood’s well-disciplined, in your-face defense and motion offensive system, that figures to provide a considerable boost down the road. Perhaps the best thing for Brad Underwood in recruiting would be for the season to get started ASAP.
