Instacap: Cowboys Fall 62-52 to Sooners in a Heartbreaker

on

In maybe the craziest and most disappointing game in a series full of crazy and disappointing games, the Cowboys came up short, losing 62-52 at home to the Sooners.

After just 3 total points were scored through four total possessions to start the game, the flood gates opened. The next 12 drives to end the first half included one punt by Oklahoma State, one field goal for Oklahoma and 10 TDs combined between the in-state rivals to send it into halftime tied 38-38

Baker Mayfield threw for an Oklahoma single-game record 598 yards and five TDs and two interceptions. He also added on score on the ground. Mayfield’s second turnover up just 3 gave OSU life. With three minutes and the ball, Oklahoma State could not pay it off. The Sooners, down two members of its secondary, held off the Cowboys who turned it over on downs.

Mason Rudolph went 28 of 54 for 448 yards and five TDs with also two interceptions including a walk-off pick to cement his career Bedlam record to 1-2 as a starter.

Costly penalties and turnovers held kept OSU from capitalizing on a record-setting day from Justice Hill who was running all over the Sooner defense for a career and OSU Bedlam-high 228 yards and two scores on 7.6 yards per carry.

Oklahoma State had the ball at Oklahoma’s 3-yard line and chance to take the lead late in the third quarter before Mason Rudolph threw an interception in his own end zone. Oklahoma would score on the next play and it seemed like we were destined for an inevitable outcome.

It became pretty clear that Mike Gundy clearly did not want to put this game in the hands or off the feet of his special teams unit. On fourth and 12, OSU’s offense stayed on the field. OSU went 3 of 4 on fourth downs with its only miss the last of the game, giving the Sooners the ball with a minute to go.

Ultimately, the Cowboys committed some costly penalties and some even more pricey turnovers and could not recover.
