Instacap: Oklahoma State Throttles Baylor 59-16 in Homecoming Rout

It started a little shakily for Oklahoma State against Baylor as the Bears marched 75 yards for a TD on the opening drive of the game, but the Cowboys recovered quickly and sufficiently to beat Baylor 59-16 and set a school record with 747 offensive yards. That first drive would be the only TD Baylor scored all game, and OSU’s empty first drive would result in its only punt of the game.

It was the Cowboys’ first win over the Bears since that freezing cold 2013 game that ended Baylor’s perfect season.

Mason Rudolph got off to a bit of a bumpy start in the first quarter, but he settled down in the second quarter and went 10/17 for 261 yards and 2 TDs in the first half. He also ran in his 6th TD of the year. It wasn’t the most impressive rushing TD of the half, though, because Justice Hill went 79 yards for a TD, which led to the 10th 100-yard rushing game of his 19-game career.

J.D. King even got in on the fun in the first half by running in the 5th TD from a few yards out. Marcell Ateman had four catches for 119 yards and a TD in the first two quarters, too. He was completely unstoppable, and yet Baylor continued to go single coverage on him.

Maybe more impressively in the first half was what OSU did after Baylor’s first drive. The Pokes forced three fumbles (recovered one) and held a team that put up 41 on OU to just 3 points on its next seven drives.

The Pokes got five TFLs and enough pressure to supply all the Robert Griffin III catchphrases for the rest of his life. Justin Phillips, Jordan Brailford and Calvin Bundage were immense in forcing Zach Smith to a 6/11 for 41 yards line in the first half and holding Baylor to just 3.4 yards per play.

All of it added up to an insurmountable first half lead of 35-10 to send BU well on its way to loss No. 6. I guess I should say BayLLLLLLor.

The second half was more of the same. After James Washington fumbled on the opening drive, OSU scored on its next four to finish off BU 59-16. Washington finished with an astounding 235 yards on just 6 receptions. He also had the first rushing TD of his career at the beginning of the 4th quarter.

But the crown jewel was this 68-yarder from Rudolph in the third.

Marcell Ateman finished with those 119 yards, and Justice Hill posted a modest but impressive 14 carries for 117 yards and a TD performance.

Rudolph ended with a productive (if sometimes inaccurate) day in which he was 19/31 for 459 yards and 3 TDs (he also had that rushing TD). It was the 7th game of his career with 400+ yards, which ties Brandon Weeden’s all-time career mark.

Saturday also marked just the fourth time in Oklahoma State history that it has had a 400-yard passer, two 100-yard receivers and a 100-yard rusher in the same game.

After Smith put up a 33/50 for 463 yards and 4-TD performance against OU a few weeks ago, OSU held him to a 11/28 for 127 yards and 1-INT outing. Baylor scored just 16 points on 14 drives against the Pokes on Saturday.

It was an absolutely dominant performance from a team that both needed to look absolutely dominant in Week 7 against Baylor and needed to get a W against the Bears, which have been a thorn in the Pokes’ side for a few years now.

Oklahoma State will head to Austin next week to take on a beat-up Texas team that was in a war with OU in Dallas, and it will do so looking less like the team that got thumped by TCU and more like the squad that came into the conference schedule looking like it had titles on its mind.
