Interesting Facts About Baylor and Waco

We looked at what you should watch for this weekend and a few players to keep an eye on during the game, but now let’s have some fun. Let’s take a gander at a few things you might not know about Baylor and Waco, Texas.

Interesting Facts

• Baylor is responsible for two glorious bright spots in recent OSU athletic history: Cowboy great John Lucas transferred from Baylor to become one of the most decorated players under Coach Sutton and a Baylor grad is responsible for this masterpiece that debuted at the Georgia game in

• While Larry Culpepper claims to have invented the College Football Playoff, Waco is where Dr. Pepper was created, manufactured and sold beginning in 1885 “originating at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store.”

• BU claims to be the oldest, continually operating university in the state of Texas, establishing its charter way back in 1845 before Texas joined the union.

• It’s quite the tailgating scene in Waco as fans can pull their boat up to the stadium and “sailgate” for the afternoon on the nearby Brazos River.

• Keep your eyes open if wondering around campus, you may just run into a pair of sister bears. Joy and Lady are the Baylor mascots and are housed at a bear facility on campus.

• One of TV’s more popular shows on HGTV called “Fixer Upper” is filmed in Waco where the Magnolia Farms empire is located.

• Wide Receiver U-Over the past few years, Baylor has put out a steady stream of talented receivers in the NFL and junior KD Cannon is generally projected to join them in 2017. Bear receivers in the pros include Corey Coleman (2015, 1st round), Terrance Williams (2008, 3rd round), Josh Gordon (2012, supplemental draft), and Kendall Wright (2008, 1st round).

Baylor appears to be what we’ve come to expect of them, with a majority of their scandal-related losses affecting depth that will play out over time. Losing eight of nine offensive and defensive line starters from a year ago will hurt how this team plays in the trenches and is definitely a factor to watch. Baylor fans have commented that this team doesn’t have the same tempo and drive that other Bear offenses have played with.

Even so, the Bears have a trademark way of hopping out to early leads and on the road, that’s something to really watch out for. While the Bears have been starting slow against SMU and Rice this season, it’s fair to assume that emotions will be high come 6:30 p.m. in McLane Stadium and the Big 12 season kicks off for the two teams. It will be key for the Cowboy offense to take early opportunities to quiet the crowd and settle into a tough road environment, maybe even get off to another hot start themselves.
