J.W. Walsh is a Straight Baller

The eulogies of J.W. Walsh’s career (whenever it ends) will be bountiful and lengthy and come to think of it, they might just place an American flag over the thing, military-style when all is said and done. There will be great, great memories and tales will be told about him for decades (OK, months) that will be elaborated upon (“I saw him throw an out route a full 35 yards one time!”) and expanded upon the way all the great ones are.

The two-handed point to the crowd after the first TD at Homecoming this season. The sprint and hug with Josh Stewart on the first TD of his college career. The ballin’ TDs in Jerryworld on FSU to start 2014. The whole thing has been memorable.

But I think the one emblazoned image of The General for me might always be the time he waltzed through end zone at Jack Trice and stuffed all those demons back into their netherworld as he willed OSU to its 12th straight victory and kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive with 28 beastly rushing yards and three total TDs.

I mean, how sweet is this? (Watch the Mike Holder fist pump at the very end)

Shortly after getting the Pokes within three, Walsh tossed the go-ahead TD to Jeff Carr and then lost his mind telling OSU’s defense to get him one stop. Just one stop. Again, that’s a short white dude with more heart than a casino’s worth of card games from Texas up in a future multimillionaire’s face screaming at him to get one dang stop.

Walsh has finally found his sweet spot. I talked about this briefly in my 10 Thoughts, but Walsh was never going to be great as a starter. You could get by. You could be good. But you couldn’t win a Big 12 title. With Mason Rudolph, you can. Check that, with Mason Rudolph and Walsh subbing in when OSU gets in the red zone, you can.

Walsh now has 20 TDs on the season as a backup QB which ties the most he ever had in any season in which he started. Somehow, that’s perfect.
