Justice Hill Named Semifinalist for Doak Walker Award
Justice Hill has been named one of 11 national semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the top running back in college football.
Hill, a true sophomore (!!), is the leading rusher in the Big 12 with 1,198 yards this season, averaging 119.8 yards per game. He also leads the conference with 12 rushing touchdowns — a mark that ranks 18th nationally.
“I’d like for somebody to show me a better running back than five, anywhere,” Gundy said recently of Hill. “I can say it for him. He’s not gonna say it, he’s too humble, and he doesn’t hardly talk, but I mean, boy, he’s pretty good.”
“If there’s a better one (than Justice Hill) out there, I’d like to see it,” Gundy added. “I like him. I like what he does.”
Hill has 13 career 100-yard rushing games in his career to date, a mark which ranks first among active FBS underclassmen. He’s up for the award with some good company, though, with Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor, and Stanford’s Bryce Love all figuring to be atop the final ballot. Perhaps this stat though, courtesy of OSU Athletics, could help him earn heavy consideration.
Among the 11 Doak Walker Award semifinalists, Hill has established himself as the top performer in big games, as he has more rushing yards and more rushing touchdowns than any of the other semifinalists in games played against ranked opponents. He’s also the hottest of the 10 semifinalists, as his 362 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in November both rank as the top totals among the 11 Doak Walker Award semifinalists in games played this month.
Here’s a look at the semifinalists up for the prestigious award.
2017 Doak Walker Award Semifinalists
Josh Adams, Notre Dame
Saquon Barkley, Penn State
Royce Freeman, Oregon
Justice Hill, Oklahoma State
Kerryon Johnson, Auburn
Ronald Jones II, USC
Phillip Lindsay, Colorado
Bryce Love, Stanford
Rashaad Penny, San Diego State
Devin Singletary, FAU
Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin
The Doak Walker Award list of 11 semifinalists will be trimmed to three finalists after this week’s games, so a big game from Hill could put him into front-runner consideration, given his hot November he’s enjoyed.
Congrats to Justice. Hard to find a more deserving student-athlete. He does everything right – he makes plays in the biggest of games and earned CoSIDA All-District honors. Special young man with elite talent. #GoPokes #okstate https://t.co/bcXLdlVqrZ
