Mike Gundy No. 18 in College Football Coaching Salaries
Mike Gundy is in a good place. He’s the king of football at his alma mater, having brought OSU’s program to heights never before seen, much less expected, over his 13-year tenure. He’s so comfortable in his orange skin that he feels free to bare a mullet and his upper body for the student body.
Gundy got a brand new contract over the summer that basically allows him to retire in Stillwater whenever he’s inclined to starting taking this farming thing seriously, and that deal earned him a spot among top-20 salaries in college football.
USA Today released the base salaries of 130 college football coaches and Mike Gundy came in at No. 18.

Gundy is third among his Big 12 counterparts behind Texas’ Tom Herman (No. 8) and TCU’s Gary Patterson (No. 9). These numbers do not include incentive bonuses that are generally written into a contract. Here’s a look at some of the reported incentives in Gundy’s latest deal.
- Appear in a non-New Year’s Six bowl game: 1.5-month’s base salary. Per the Tulsa World: “Gundy’s base salary is $500,000 — the other $3.7 million falls under his talent and personal services contract and money given to his retirement program. So this would be a $62,500 bonus.”
- Appear in a New Year’s Six bowl game: $125,000
- Win the conference championship game, finish first (or tied for first) if there is no conference championship game, or participate in a College Football Playoff semifinal game: $150,00
- Appear in the CFP national championship game: $350,000
- Win the CFP national championship game: $750,000
As Kyle Porter pointed out last week, Oklahoma State has been a top-20 program over the Gundy’s term, coming in at the 17th most successful program in the country. Over the last 10 years, OSU is 12th in winning percentage among FBS schools at 92-32.
Mike Gundy and Bret Bielema both make $4.2M a year. Records since 2013 (when Bielema took over Arkansas) …
Gundy: 43-16
Bielema: 27-31— Pistols Firing (@pistolsguys) October 25, 2017
The base number on Gundy’s contract could have been higher but it was reported that the 13th-year head man pushed for concessions elsewhere like increase salaries for support staff and budgeting for facility improvements. Either way, Gundy’s happy with Oklahoma State, Oklahoma State happy with Gundy and his salary reflects that.
